7/8 2 cities that start with Z in 1 day
We decided to meet down in the lobby around 9:00 for breakfast and then head out into town. We snagged a few more snacks from the breakfast buffet because we knew we would have another long travel day and might not have a lot of time to buy any snacks later. Plus, the cheese wedges were really good.
We all headed into town to get some sandwiches and drinks for the train ride. We got back to the hotel, checked out, and then went back to see how much the Matterhorn Museum cost. At 10 euro, and the fact we had to get our train in a little over an hour, Combes and I declined and decided to explore the town cemetery. We were very interested at the fact that about half of the people buried there belonged to one of three families. We also noticed that the people buried there either died young (20 or younger) or very old (80 plus.)
We got back to the hotel and waited for everyone else to join us. When they got back from the museum, we loaded up the little battery operated shuttle and were driven back to the train station. We immediately got on the train and headed out of Zermatt, one of the highlights of my trip so far.
After about 40 mins we had to switch trains to head to Zurich. We had just missed a train by 2 mins. but got on another one that took off about 35 mins later. This train was very clean and spacious and was very quiet. The ride was so smooth I wasn't sure I was even moving.
After a couple hours we got into Zurich. The train station was suuuupppeer crowded! Mom and Renee went and bought the tram tickets we needed to get to our hotel. About 10 mins later we crossed the street to get on the tram.
As it pulled up, we all piled on. Or so we thought. As the door closed and we started moving, I heard my dad say "oh s***!" and looked out the window to see Chris and Bruce left on the sidewalk. Oops! My mom quickly decided to jump out at the next stop and run back and find them since they had no tram tickets and didn't know where we were staying. Renee, Combes, my dad and I rode to our stop and got off and waited. 30 mins and 4 trains later, they got off and met back up with us. Mom told us how she almost got squished between two trains, at first couldn't find them, and eventually did find them. We made our way to our hotel which was pretty far out of the city center. After checking in, we went to our rooms, then met up again right after to go back on the tram to find a place to eat dinner.
The first area we got off the tram was the Turkish part of town. Realizing we weren't In the mood for Turkish food, whatever that may be, we got back on and got off in the central part of town. We found a "Mexican" restaurant, which sounded pretty good to most of us. Chris decided to leave and go to McD's and Bruce thought Indian food sounded better so they went off in their own directions.
After scanning the stupidly expensive menu, ($10 for a side of rice! $30 for a regular burrito!!!) we decided to share some appetizers, which were also wayyyyy overpriced. Mom and Renee shared a 1/2 liter of margaritas ($30!!!) and tap water was fine for me.
After dinner, we walked around an open air market near the restaurant. There were vendors selling anything from falafel to jewelry to carvings. It started to sprinkle so we knew it was time to head back to the hotel.
We hopped back on the train and got back to the hotel just as it really started to rain. I was sharing a room with my parents for the next 2 nights so I just decided to go to bed a little earlier than normal. Well, at least after a couple games of iPhone Catan with Combes. The next day we were planning to get up and spend all day in Zurich so I knew I better get some good sleep.
