So sad to leave Koh Tao as it was really chilled and a beautiful place. But it's onwards in the journey and off to Cambodia. We caught a ferry from Koa Tao to Chumphon which is on the mainland of Thailand. This ferry journey was much much better than the last one. We travelled with our new companion, Daisy and the sun was shining allowing for plenty of sun bathing on the top deck. The journey took about 3 hours.
Chumphon is a stop gap for a lot of travellers waiting to get to Bangkok, so we went to a restaurant that offered free wifi, plug sockets and even a bath if required lol. We had to wait until after 11 at night which was far to late for the owner so she locked up around us and told us to stay as long as needed. Such amazing generosity and trust.
Our train was about 1 hour late but when it arrived we were all so tired, sleeping would be easy. We boarded and found our bends. Isla and I were on top bunks opposite each other, we said goodnight and then closed the curtains around our bed for the night and got some sleep. The journey was good, managed to get some sleep but tended to wake up at every station the train stopped at.
We eventually arrived in Bangkok after a 9 hour journey but all in all it was a good experience. In the train station we booked our next train to Cambodia, a 4hr journey for less than £1... crazy. The train journey was from Aranypraphet to Poipet. We arrived in Poipet in darkness and got hounded by Cambodians trying to sell us a Visa for over the odds. We had planned for this and headed straight to the government building. It was the correct place to get the visa but they still wanted an extra £2.... Cheeky really but set the tone for what Cambodia would be like.
There used to be a free bus transfer that would take you from the border to a location a short trip away to book transport onward to Siem Reap, however this is no longer the case and the mini buses are monopolised so they have you over a barrel. We were in a group of 8 English travellers and agreed to pay $90, the scamming driver tried to drop us off at a tuk tuk station a few K out of the city centre to force us to pay more money. Luckily one of our group lived and worked in Siem Reap and spotted this happening so we were able to get out and walk the rest. Cheeky driver still didn't want to stop so we literally opened the door whilst still moving. Surprise surprise as we started walking into town a swarm of tuk tuks surrounded us and tried to get us to ride. We all said no and luckily they left us alone, considering it was 11 at night and walking down the back streets.
We made it safely to our hotel which was lovely for only £10 per night. We even had under floor heating which is totally not necessary in Cambodia with the temperature being so high. Glad that the trip from ThIland was finally over and now able to look forward to what Cambodia has to offer.
