Good Afternoon all the way from Sossusvlei!
Only a quick entry today, internet connection is NOT a happy one lol! So, yesterday morning we got up insanly early to go and see the sunrise...from the top of a giant sand dune! Now dont get me wrong, sunrises are pretty and sand dunes are cool, but climbing a sand dune at 4am to see a sunrise...not cool. Eventually, me and louise (who by the way I think I am spending new years eve with in ireland...vry cool) decided we were both far too unfit to climb any further and stopped about 1/3 of the way up...please bare in mind this may sound impressive considering how big it was, but John, who is past 60 im sure, made it past us, by a LONG way. Anyway, we watched the sunrise which was beautiful and then made our way back down to the truck where we found bacon sandwiches being made for us as a congratualtory breakfast...we were obviously first in line and damn proud of it. Once everyone else had made their way back we finished breakfast and made our way to Sossusvlei - which basically is a desert. A very dry, very big, very hot desert. A desert which is apparently home to crazy little Japanese women who visited 10 years ago and never left and now show people round the very big very dry desert. I know, dont even comment...
So that was fun, we were shown the different wildlife that managed to survive there, and how everything HAD to have adaptation - it was a very big issue with the crazy japanese lady (why by the way skipped and hopped as opposed to walking!) She had adaptation, I had adaptation, everyone had adaptation, otherwise we would die. That was the basics of her tour. So about a 1.1km walk later we were faced with another dune - but this one we HAD to climb otherwise we wouldnt see the next part of the tour - a big dead patch of salt ground where everything was frozen in death - how very pleasant. The best thing of the whole day though was that I actually made it up the dune! i nearly died doing it but i made it! and obviously (or if you are me anyway) the most logical and sensible way down a dune on the other side...is to ROLL!!! Now sarah is you are reading this i completly blame you for this! By the time i got to the bottom, not only was my camera partly broken and most of my belongings lost to the sand, but i had sand in places a woman should never have sand! seriously, when i showered later i could make a sandcastle out of the amount of sand that came out of me! Not just off me, out of me! But it was sooooo worth it!
Afternoon was pretty chilled, pool and bar, the ususal, except we also had a BBQ in the evening and went to watch sunset on a different dune, one which was a lot shallower and more fun in my opinion - got some great photos of everyone who came (it was optional) so that was a great evening in my opinion.
Told you it would be a short entry! But tomorrow we go to Swakopmund for a couple days so hopefully will have lots to write about then!
Bye xx
