The train was about a 9 hour ride, it was my first time being on a train like that and all I wanted was to sleep! I just couldn't get comfortable, everything hurt and I really needed to be able to stretch out. Lisa had told me the cabin would be extremely cold but the one blanket I took from our flight did the trick!
When we got to Luxor we walked to our hostel/hotel called The Oasis. So many people were constantly bugging us for taxi's, hotels, carriage rides, etc. I think the trick is to just smile and say no thank-you (La Shukran), they constantly but Lisa to smile! Makes me laugh, she gets so annoyed. I don't think she's enjoying the trip as much as I am, but she's felt really dehydrated and had a stomach bug before we even left Albuquerque so I feel for her.
We took a couple hours to nap and then went to fill out our room info, the manager was helpful but Lisa didn't trust him. After that we walked around and decided to get lunch, we ate at this outdoor place called Sufra's and I had a cucumber, onion, tomato, lemon, and parsley salad that was just delicious! As was the mango juice! Yum Yum! Then we headed over to Luxor temple, I was able to get them to use my drivers license as a student ID so I finally saved some money! Sweet!
Luxor temple just blew my mind, it is so well preserved and you can still see a lot of the hieroglyphics and in-tact statues, its just crazy that it still stands after all this time. The sheer size of everything in the temple is stunning, it's really magnificent and leaves you in absolute awe. Lisa and I got tons of photos, and a guard and Egyptian showed us some cool stuff and took photos of us for 1 LE baksheesh, which Lisa paid up because I didn't want to.
After the temple we attempted going to the mummification and Luxor museum but both were closed early due to Ramadan. So instead we walked all around the center of Luxor next to the Nile and just relaxed and watched the people. We eventually got pretty hungry and decided to head to the Luxor market place and find somewhere to eat, again not as easy as it sounds and man do those people hassle you in the market! I just got to ignoring them or shaking my head.
We could only find one place to eat, it was a very fancy restaurant called Jamboree and they were all so pleasant. We got a seat overlooking the market which was really neat and when the daily prayer calls are made it echos over the streets and is a very surreal feeling. I ordered a chicken tagen which is basically chunks of chicken, potatoes, and peppers in red sauce and seasoning over a little pile of rice, but its served in this small earthenware dish that is put right into the oven and then right from there onto your table. It was very cool and the food was amazing! I wasn't even hungry enough to finish the whole thing initially but it tasted so good that I scarfed the whole thing!
Afterwards we got some more water and headed home to rest, we have to get up early again!
