G’day Everybody!
So this is going to be a pretty lengthy blog as we have lots and lots to tell you! Approximately three weeks ago Miss Selby joined us in Melbourne so that our three week spaceship extravaganza could begin!
So we picked up our spaceship (check out the pics) and hit the road starting off with the Great Ocean Road where we were expecting great views and great surf! Unfortunately the weather closely resembled that of Cornwall (not what we signed up for) so we only stayed for a few days and went on a search for some sunshine!
So after a pretty mammoth drive (12 hours) our hunt led us to the Blue Mountains which were really pretty and very blue! Jen wore walking boots for the first time in her life (not a great look for her) but we took in some stunning views and saw some pretty awesome waterfalls! Highlight being when I fell into one of the waterfalls! Good job I landed on my bum
Next stop on our whirlwind tour of New South Wales led us to Newcastle where we met a man with a cat who really liked our spaceship and plonked the cat on the roof! Newcastle began our BBQ by the beach extravaganza as we seemed to do it every night for the next couple of weeks! Beer, BBQ, Beach and sunset- pretty perfect combination so definitely not complaining! Although due to Miss Vegetarian some of our BBQ’s were a bit strange. I think the Omlette on the BBQ was our most tragic attempt
Seal Rocks was pretty much the beach highlight of our trip! Secluded cove with gorgeous sand and surf! Could of stayed there for a long long time however there was more to see so we next hit Port Macquire where we went to the Koala hospital (massive Chlamydia outbreak in the Koala population apparently).
Now would be a good time to mention that throughout these three weeks we have been camping in our spaceship in whatever location suited us! It varied quite a bit between beach side, motorway stops and national parks. My favourite was Great Otway national park where we were surrounded by Kangaroo’s. They must have been amazed by the bright orange spaceship which had landed in their park. I think that was Jen’s least favourite as her and Sian discovered a massive spider living in the toilet!
So Coff’s Harbour was a stop that we were excited about as it contains the BIG BANANA! However we were massively disappointed by this so called theme park as the rides were rubbish however we can now say we have seen the world’s biggest banana! So we left Coff’s pretty early and headed for the greatness that is Byron Bay! Possibly the most chilled out place I have ever been to! Plus there is always great surf as it’s got beaches facing every direction!
However disaster struck during our Byron Bay stay! The Spaceship broke down! Well and truly died! As this was our house and form of transport we figured this was a bad thing! God bless the RAC man who came to our rescue (Sian was driving that day by the way). Until this point we had been doing quite well on the driving front. I’d only driven off once with the boot up and Sian had only nearly killed pedestrians once or twice
Neighbouring Byron bay is a very cool place called Nimbin. A tiny village that is home to lots and lots of hippies so it is full of psychedelic art and marijuana. They are on a mission to legalise the drug however from what I could gather there was no need. People were openly selling it and smoking it on the street anyway!
Surfers Paradise became our penultimate stop where me and Sian headed up the Q1 tower which is the highest residential tower in the world- pretty epic! The lift shoots you up 77 falls in 43 seconds! Wicked views and really nice cheesecake!
Last stop Brisbane where we parted ways with our beloved spaceship! Quite a relief considering three of us had been sharing a ¾ mattress for 3 weeks! Sian isn’t what you’d call a quiet sleeper so we welcomed a bed each with welcome arms- not to mention a hot shower! Solar showers are not the best!
So we spent the weekend exploring Brisbane! Actually made friends with some Aussies which was nice as everyone we’d met before that was a tourist! Now it is time for us all to go separate ways for a while and explore Oz on our own!
I am now in Bundaberg (very small town) where I am picking Macademia's for a living! Sian is going to continue enjoying brissy life while Jen retraces her steps and shares her worldly knowledge with Gareth who landed yesterday! So you may be treated to double the amount of blogs or none at all depending on how eventful our lives are over the next few weeks
Miss you all!
Em and Jen x
