After hearing so many people banging on about how horrible Bangkok and Khao San Road were we were a little worried. However, we were greated with a sign for Burger King, McDonalds, Starbucks and Swensens (a fantastic ice cream parlour...a massive sundae for 60baht...how good is that?!). Seriously people, what have you all been moaning about, try Beijing! Give us a globalised city full of tourists any day.
We didn't waste any time and hit the MBK centre the following day. We spilt up from the lads so they could maintain their sanity rather than shop with us. We were not on form though and bought nothing, can you believe it?! Took a trip to the cinema (for a bit of Jonny and Orlando action) where we had to stand for the Kings national anthem, madness! We also went to Chatuchak weekend market, the biggest market in the world, something like 8,000 stalls!! If it hadn't have been so hot, it would have been heaven. Seriously people, if for no other reason you have to come to Thailand for this market, everything you can imagine and so cheap. Denise excelled herself with buying even more scarfs but decided against the much needed stainless steel cutlery set. Jen didn't hold back and bought even more Buddhas, guys, when we get back just call her the Dalai Lama. We decided against the St Bernard, again with the shipping home problems.
It wasn't all shopping, we added culture too with a floating market which was different to say the least. The drivers were mental crashing into each other and pulling you in when you looked even the slightest bit interested. We also went on our first ride in a tuk-tuk and visited the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha which were very impressive with lots of gold. Still not Buddhad out we went to see Big Buddha and Lucky Buddha where we met some great Thai people who taught us about Buddism and Thailand in general. Sadly we had to say bye to Andy who was heading down under for some ozzy action...then there were three.
Once we had bought all the tack in Bangkok we decided it was time for culture and headed west to Kanchanaburi.
