After checking in quite late on our first night and pretty much heading straight to bed, we have spend the last couple of days catching up on our leisure time and getting some of our chores done before we start to travel around again.
When we awoke on our first morning on the coral coast we decided we should try to explore a little and see what was around us, so we set off along the beach. It was immediately apparent that the Coral Coast was not just some romantic name that somebody had dreamt up one day, but that the entire beach was covered in dead coral that had turned bright white. There was not a grain of sand to be seen so we continued along in our flip flops to save our feet from death by laceration only for one particularly strong wave to come along and pull on of David's flip flops right off his feet. It wasn't easy trying to get it back whilst hoping along on the one foot that was protected from the ground! We concluded that perhaps this wasn't the best idea we had had and headed back to the hostel and the sun loungers by the pool.
That night we were told by a couple of Kiwi's that there were some bars along the beach so off we went, dodging frogs in the grass we climbed over a barbed wire fence to the beach and started to walk only to be met about ten minutes later in the pitch black by a big river! We walked through another resort once again dodging frogs and dogs to get to the road and as we had no idea where we were, we decided to go into a massive 5 star resort to see if they had a bar. They had four of them and golf carts to drive the guests around from place to place - it was definitely not for the likes of us! It's even officially the only place in the whole of Fiji with a lift! After just one drink we decided to head back to our hostel as the doctors and lawyers and physicians started comparing salaries and we knew this really wasn't wheat we had come away for. As it had taken about thirty minutes to get to the resort via the beach, we decided to head back via the road and, although we had no idea how long it was going to take us, we thought it would be much easier than trying to navigate the beach again. Five minutes later and the four of us were nearly doubled over laughing as we discovered that our resort was next door to the place we had just been! Morale of the story, if a Kiwi points down the beach, take the road!
The next couple of days were spend doing very little except relaxing in the sun by the pool (with the coldest water in Fiji in it!!) and enjoying the luxuries of living with a chef! All this was a welcome break from the often chaotic rushing around that we did throughout Vietnam and Thailand. Today we were joined in our little hut by an English couple that were travelling the world in thirty days and had been to Australia for all of two days in Sydney before flying out to Fiji. A little bit odd to say the least!
Tomorrow we are on the move again on the next leg of our Feejee Experience as we head east towards the capital of Fiji - Suva.
