Blogfans.......Greetings from deepest, darkest Peru!! We hear of great storms lashing the country, are your xmas adverts hitting TV yet, and are those two idiots STILL in X Factor?!
Anyway, I write to you in some distress, but I feel as though I must confess, today was the day where my masculinity was stripped from me!! Today was a day where I was forceably dragged from the TV whilst watching England-Brazil to see a monestary to see where the nuns of Arequipa live, safe to say Jen is now eternally in my debt!
Confessions over, ill begin.....Bolivia.......was...well...um....um....enough said.
No, seriously, Boliva was cool, after leaving that crazy town La Paz we headed towards Lake Titicaca, (the highest sale-able lake in the World, and it is pretty HUGE!!) and the town of Copacabana (of which Copacabana beach in Brazil was named after, and if you take out the glass, dog poo and homeless people on the beach, you can kind of see why, if you shut your eyes a bit and look in the sun). We travelled by small-cramped-time-for-Brad-to-eat-his-knees bus and boat to get there and once settled in we headed out to Isla Del Sol in the middle of this huge water piece.
Once on the Island we proceeded to get ridiculously sun burnt (my lips still ache from the burn!) and hiked across the Island to take in some breathtaking views! We are travelling really fast now, staying in places for a few days, then moving on just to see as much as we can of this amazing continent. With that in mind, we headed to Puno, Peru, which is just across the Bolivia-Peru border. Different country, same old bowler hat women though!
Puno was all about ´The Floating Islands´! These 50 islands are made out of reeds and float around on Lake Titicaca and people actually choose to live here! But what a life! So serene and relaxing, so much so that we decided to don traditional dress and get in one of their houses, invited of course, we didnt ransack the place! Great gear, although having worked in a paint factory I know what an explosion of colour looks like and we were wearing it!
Once Puno was done, we headed to our first large settlement in a while in Arequipa! It has to be said, just like the guidebook said, the main plaza is amongst the best in South America, and taken by the dressing up theme, we doned poncho´s and watched a beaut of a sunset go down behind the plaza from the highest bar in town all the time whilst being watched, patiently by the Misti Volcano.
There is something quite mysterious being in a town which is overshadowed by a volcano which will, one day (and hopefully not tomorrow) go pyroclastic and cover this great town.
Yesterday we took in a day trip to the Colca Canyon to see the great, and massive Condor birds swoop down the canyon looking for prey. After our 2:30am start we headed to the canyon to compare it to last summers adventure of the US and the Grand Canyon. Sorry, did you miss that one?! 2:30am START!?!?!??!?! Verdict is in though, Grand Canyon 1 - Colca Canyon 0.
Fans of watching our progess on the interactive map will be pleased to know that some key milestones are now falling into place. After much debate, we WILL now be going to the Galapagos Islands on the 7th December!! Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution here, Ill see if its thought provoking enough for me to come up with something similar. Our flights are also booked from South to Central America and also Central to North America! So with two months done, we´re all set to push on an see and do as much as we possibly can in the next four months!
If anyone from Marmite is reading, send some over, Im gagging for some! Im sure the Peruvians would definately buy some from the blonde giant lanking around their country!
The next blog will be extremely exciting as it will almost be ´Inca Trail eve´.........
Till next time...............xxxxxxx
