Around the World Forever
My bus trip to San Gil is memorable for one reason and one reason only; a Belgian girl named Han. Han has one of those unique, way-out-there personalities that always keeps you guessing about her sanity, sobriety, and general knowledge of how the world actually works. Today, her fascination was drawn out the bus window to the sides of the country roads where plump, fully plumaged, healthy looking chickens roamed freely about. Her amazement literally amazed me and kept me constantly laughing to myself as she randomly blurted things out in her slightly accented English. "Wow, look at that cock...it's huge!" or "Just a fantastic chicken, just fantastic. Look at it Jeff LOOK at IT." "OK, I get it, you like chickens." "But these chickens are different," she said. And so it went for about two hours...admiring the Colombian chicken until her fascination turned to mens' hats...large hats, just like the large chickens moments earlier. San Gil has a reputation for outdoor adventure here in Colombia. Rafting, kayaking,, parasailing, hiking, swimming, whatever, it's here. I found cooling off in the swimming holes in the nearby rivers to be the most enjoyable as well as the most free. But if you want, you can spend plenty of money on guided activities here. The surrounding areas and colonial villages make great day trips and I usually hung out with a Chinese girl who calls herself Pink(because no one can say her Chinese name) and Han and Kris, the couple from Belgium. It's a nice area to spend a few days but like I mentioned earlier, I'm going north to the Caribbean coast for Colombia's biggest party, Carnival in Barranquilla (also Shakira's hometown). Prepare for the hedonism! Plus, I'm looking forward to seeing Han and Kris, with whom I've become good friends, up there as well.....
