The drive here from Brisbane took a couple of hours, and we travelled through some lovely countryside, the views from the Lamington plateau were fantastic. The last bit of the drive was through pretty impenetrable-looking rain-forest, with precipitous drops at the side of the narrow road, and we were expecting the hotel, O'Reilly's Rain-forest Retreat, to be a quiet and reclusive place, a bit 'new-age ecolodge', a bit 'feng-shui rain-forest'! So it was a bit of a shock when we drove in, past the cafe, souvenir shop, and parrot-feeding enclosure! It was like Walton Hall Gardens, with the heat turned up!
Our room, however, was fantastic. A studio-style apartment, with spa-tub, a fantastic view of the rain-forest, and paddymelons (a type of wallaby) grazing outside our window!
We're booked in for an early morning guided walk tomorrow, to look at the birds, and an afternoon walk in the rain-forest. Plenty of insect repellant required then!
