Monday - 27 degrees but Tuesday- 14, just the day for an outing to Alcatraz! It was a creepy but excellent experience, saw the old prison cells as well as wandering around the island. In the afternoon we went on the bus to the Golden Gate Bridge and park - stupidly foggy but definitely worth the trip.
Today hic! Just back from a great half day visiting 2 Vineyards and a cheesemakers in Sonoma on the way to Napa Vallley with Joe, our private guide and driver. Great experience, great company, great views, and great wines!
Winding up tonight to get ready for L.A. We're leaving tomorrow in the early afternoon and should arrive just in time for a steak and a glass of wine!
Welcome to our blog to the students of Ochiltree Primary School who are following our travels. Let me introduce myself, I'm Craig, Jean's nephew and I'm travelling with her. I'm 24 and work as a musician playing gigs and teaching guitar. Feel free to ask us anything about our trip! Meanwhile here's something for you to go and find out: Who lived on Alcatraz before it was a prison?

Lorna What a wonderful idea to have a private guide! Wine, steak, cheese plus great company and views - all this is ensuring a wonderful time.
muriel mcdougall Sounds like the life!!! Good food, good wine and travelling in style with your own personal guide! What more could you ask for. Can't wait to hear about your next leg of the journey in LA. Muriel and Alistair
Linda Hair Hi Craig and Jean, Peter, Archie, Jack and Campbell looked up the answer to the question, who lived on Alcatraz before it was a prison and found out that it was an explorer called Juan Manuel de Ayala. We hope this is correct! Peter would like to know if you will be going to any gigs whilst you are travelling and Keiran wonders if you are going to visit Hollywood Boulevard when in LA? Leah is curious if you play any other musical instruments! The children have started to make a project about the trip and we looked at your blog today on the interactive whiteboard. We hope you both enjoy your trip to LA!
Jean Nisbet Good to hear from Ochiltree! The answer we wanted was much easier than the one you came up with - yes, you were right but the main group who occupied Alcatraz Island were the US Army, defending the country from invaders who never came! I'm on a hotel computer and need to go and eat and let other people use it - so talk again later! Jean
Sandra Bunch Hi glad to hear you've made it to your first stop. Sounds great! What likes the pizzas there Craig!!! Your cameras will be red hot :) :) :) Take care. Talk soon. x
Al Hola folks. Glad to hear San Fran is treating you so well... I'm particularly jealous of the steak, wine and cheese! Alcatraz sounds really interesting too. Enjoy the next stop...
Steven Bunch Hi Craig and Jean, My Mum was telling me about your trip. Hope you are enjoying California. Where else are you going? I'm in Wellington, New Zealand just now. Enjoy your travels, Steve
Jean Nisbet Hi to the kids at Ochiltree. This is Craig and to answer your questions - Keiran - Yes we went through Hollywood Boulevard today whilst on a massive bus tour of the city. We passed a Chinese restaurant which was made famous in the movie Rush Hour featuring Jackie chan and Chris Tucker. And Leah - Yes I play other instruments as well, I play electric, acoustic and bass guitars, I sing and I also play drums and percussion. I like to dabble in playing keyboards too although they are certainly not my strong point. Steve - great to here from you, I hope all is well with you and your wife. Are you staying long term in New Zealand at the moment? I guess you know all about travelling by now so you will fully understand how excited we are about all of this, so far it has been brilliant. If you click on the map on the blog it will you show where we'll be visiting over the next 5 weeks. It's great to here from you as well Sandra, it's been all go thus far but we are intending to do nothing except relax tomorrow.
Stuart Never thought of US as a cheeese making country. I suppose it's logical since there must be millions of cows. As a cheese afficionado (gourmand), what kind of cheeses are made in Napa? Any exported?
Geoff Good to see the photos of LA and San Fran as we'll probably never get there!
Lindzie Glad you guys r having fun!!! Nice to see the photos, luv the 1 with the Hollywood sign, beautiful!!! So jealous!!!!! Have an absolute ball!!! Lotsa lurv the McNizzies!!!!!!! x x x
Jean Nisbet Here's an LA question for Ochiltree: What is so important about the Avila House?
