I write this entry as we sit on a train from Biarritz, France to Toulouse. Toulouse is known as La Ville Rose which means The Pink City - apparently very funky with many students who give it a youthful kick! Will report more when we have explored it!
I'm a little bit cranky because I was only able to get what felt like 1 hour sleep last night and we all know how happy Jazzy is when she is tired! The minimal sleep was due to a combo of a few things - hooting horns, loud music, drunk people coming in and slamming doors and finally, the various sounds of a couple doing the 'no pants dance' in the neighbouring room!! As you can imagine when we finally get on the train, I get the chance to enjoy a little slumber! We were very excited to board and find out we get a little cabin of our own! I make the most of the spare seats by spreading my bod over the four seats beside me which is dandy, get my blanket and ipod all set up! Anyway, this little kid and his mum rock up and the kid steals my bed! The train man comes and yells at me in French (we assume saying, move you ass!). Not a happy traveller at this stage!
OMG, I am now reporting live! Tim & are looking at each other going, 'what the HELL is that SMELL! Now, we now - the kid who stole my bed has now crapped! The idiot of a mother in our cabin has just started changing her little brat's nappy!! The smell is repulsive and I cannot breathe without heaving, is she fricking INSANE?? Who opens a kid's nappy with a stinking poo in it in a confined space - we're talking like 1 metre x 3 here! No windows!! And no air-she hasn't even opened the door the freak and we can't reach it!! I am appalled and feel ill!! Tim is sitting in the corner doing his best to sink into the seat fabric, listening to his ipod with a map covering his whole head whilst I am sitting half a metre away from the nappy changing process!! What the F!*K is she thinking!! GO TO THE EFFING BATHROOM!! I'm struggling to breathe, this has to be some kind of joke?? Oh thank god, she's leaving now with the stinking child and soiled nappy in hand, oh wait - she just shut the door behind her!! So I just leapt up and open the door to full capacity, it still reeks in here, I am going to need to take a walk - seriously could pass out right now due to lack of oxygen from having to breathe s*** particles for the last ten minutes!!! Oh man…
The room has started to become semi-breathable so I can continue.. Note to self: NEVER EVER change child's nappy in public!!!
Sadly we only had 2 nights in Biarritz. We really loved it and hope to get back there. It glimmers with architectural treasures from the Belle Epoque and art deco eras. Mostly now though it has a really beachy lifestyle which is really popular with European surfers - soon to be Australian! Because we spent the extra week in Hossegor, which was amazing - we had to sacrifice some of the time we would spend travelling. So we only had time to explore the coastline which was so amazing. Our hotel was in a great spot, Tim's hour long accom research once again paid off. We really hope to get our French Visas and head back to Biarritz to work. It has beautiful beaches, cosy bars and restaurants, amazing coastal scenery as our photos show! Pretty little flower boxes are in all the windows and there are so many Tea Cup Yorkies!!! I just want to take one home!! We had a night at the Casino on our first night which was actually pretty fun. It was my first time at playing black jack by myself - sitting at the table!! Was a bit apprehensive initially considering I play with no skill and was a little shy doing my 5 euro bets whilst men beside me were starting at 50 euro!! I didn't make any profit - we plaid for like 4 hours! I did however spend 20 euro. Tim on the other hand came out 350 euro richer! Which worked well for me because I was shouted a very nice, romantic dinner with crepes and icecream to finish!
We have decided that we fit into the category of 1st Class Backpackers which is fine by me - I quite like the label! However, Tim & I were looking at my ever decreasing funds on netbank and worked out that we can no longer be 1st Class Backpackers. No restaurants & cafes, no coffees, no ice creams - all the things I love! Unfortunately its crunch time, and it looks like tinned tomato soup and baguettes with cheese are on the dinner menu!
Tim & I thought there would be a café on the train so we didn't pick up a sandwich before we came on board - turns out there isn't and the 4 hour train trip is going very slowly! We are so hungry in fact that both of us, yes Tim included - has had an Ultra Clear! For those who don't know what that is, it's a natural detox powdered drink that fills you up as well as detoxing and vitamins. It is a thick, chalky paste that you somehow have to swallow and Tim nearly vomited in the process!
So we shall leave you here, tired and hungry - that's what backpacking is all about though right!!
