The day started with a torrential downpour so I waited it out with Rachel and Becky, playing card games on the steps of the hostel (attempting to play Go Fish but none of us could remember the rules). When the skies finally cleared, we had breakfast at a cafe and packed lunch from the grocery store. The girls set off for the beach so we said goodbye and then I made for the bus station. I killed time by chatting with other people that were waiting and then finally when my bus arrived (an hour late), I was off to Dubrovnik. The drive was right along the coast and at points the land dropped hundreds of feet on the edge of the road, down to the turquoise waters below. The landscape was breathtaking, with mountains and sea on either side. At times, the clouds blanketed the mountaintops like giant puffs of cotton. Every minute made more and more anxious to reach Dubrovnik! We passed through Bosnia for a brief time, bringing my total number of countries visited so far to 14! The bus dropped me off on the edge of town and then I caught a suffocatingly hot and packed city bus to the old town. The main part of Dubrovnik, it's a walled city of of beautiful old red tile roof buildings and white marbled streets and immediately upon arriving I understood why it's called the 'Pearl of the Adriatic'. I walked through Pile Gate, the main entrance of the city, and found myself on the end of a long street swarming with tourists (the only downside to this amazing city). My hostel was right off of this street so I went to check in, when the owner informed me that he didn't have a bed available but instead offered me a couch to sleep on for the equivalent of $5. On a backpacker's budget, I couldn't've asked for better! I put my stuff in a broom closet and then went out to wander the city. It was already nighttime by now so the town was lit by the soft light of street lamps, creating one of the most wonderful and picturesque places I've ever set eyes on. It rained for a short bit, but I waited it out under cover of an archway and then continued on my way. After I had explored almost the entire old town, I returned to my couch and was off to sleep!
