New Zealand must be the cleanest country on earth. We have not seen litter anywhere, even in town centres or beaches. There is an obsession about importing pests into the country and I think this has resulted in people always taking their rubbish home with them.
Last night was the cleanest camp site we have stayed at. Himatangi on the west coast. It was so windy that our van shook all night. The owner was up at 7am polishing the sinks before we used them.
I discovered my bank card was not working due to Nat West fraud department blocking it. Perhaps the were confused with me not being in Ireland! 3 phone calls later and dozens of security questions later it was unblocked.
We set off south to Wellington, as we approached the city we did a scenic coastal route. The wind was still very strong and the sea breaking spectacularly on the rocks. We noticed a ferry going out bobbing around like a cork and resolved to take some Stugeron before our crossing tomorrow. I persuaded Sue to stay down town in a mobile home park on the harbour front. It was bizzare with office blocks towering over us and a 6 lane road running feet from where we slept.
Wellington is built on the hillside overlooking the bay and we took a cable car to the top to look over the city. It is also the home of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. This a wonderful new museum which our 2.5 hours did not do justice to. It is also free!
