It rained all night, which wasn't a good sign for our helicopter trip to the top of Franz Joseph Glacier and a walk with crampons on the glacier. Our trip was to start at 11:10 and the forecast was for improving weather. 9 o'clock the rain stopped and blue sky was seen. 10 o'clock raining again. We decided to visit the kiwi centre where they are working to save the endangered species. As 11 approached the skies started to clear and you could get glimpses of the mountain tops. We went to the centre to be told they wanted to go today but thought best to wait another half an hour. We came back half an hour later to find out it was too windy so trip off. How disappointing!
We drove to the path leading to the glacier and walked up to the base which was good but you are only able to go on the glacier by helicopter so just stood and looked and admired from the end of the path.
Afterwards continued south on highway 6 till the point the road was closed for the night. It has had major rock and mud slips so major repairs are underway.
