It's a few days into my trip so I'd though i'd share my first ever blog (how exciting!, probably more for me than you!)
Anyway, Delhi is bloody mental, and not always in a good way! Really is not a city for the faint hearted. You feel as if you are taking your life into your hands just trying to cross the street.
For those of you who have been before, you'll know what I mean. When I went to Goa last year I did complain that I did not get to see the real India, I've now had that chance.
On arrival the taxi driver did mention that I was staying in the 'poor' area of the city, and he's right! by night it looks like a red light district (well what i assume this is what a red light area would look like..........) I've not taken any photo's of the area yet, as to be honest it would worry me having the camera on show.
The roads (if you can call them that) are pure carnage and is just so busy with cars, bike, auto rickshaws. I still can't tell who has right of way here! though in fairness it does seem to strangely all work. In any space you can fit a bike or rickshaw you have them. This f*king constant beeping 24/7 really gives you a headache! With the area I am in (slumsville) it's not as if you can just walk on the pavements as 1, these tend to be used a toilet and 2, everyone drives on them anyway! Albeit if you go to nicer areas this is better.
The sight I don't think I will forget though is of children playing in the piles of rubbish and throwing pieces of food and such for the birds who are circling above to catch.
The amount of dust & pollution seem quite high (brand new shiny white trainers - not a good idea)
If you do go to the wealthier areas of Town (like Cannaught Place) these are very different and a lot cleaner. Central park is a nice area to sit and relax away from the hustle and bustle. It was in Cannaught Place that I had a few drinks in Q'Ba which is the 15th best bar in the world! quite easy to blow my days budget here on a few drinks. Though this is certainly not a city you want to be drunk in, you need to keep what little wits you already have about you.
So I've done quite a bit of sightseeing around Delhi.
Red Fort (Lal Qila) massive, massive fort built from sandstone dating back to around 1638, got to see it in the morning mist, was really impressive. This is also were the prime minister addresses the nation on Independenceday day.
Chandni Chowk - had a cycle rickshaw tour around the tiny lanes in old deli, have to admit the spices and coulurs of things on sale are amazing.
Humayuns Tomb - this is probably Delhi's most amazing tourist attraction, predating the Taj Mahal by around 30 years. Home to over 100 tombs all set in stunning gardens. Is probably not as impressive as the Taj Mahal will be, but is still jaw droppingly amazing.
Lotus Temple (Bahai) I assume this would be an Indian place of worship, though is apparently home to the Bahai faith (which welcomes all faiths under one roof). Did have a little spiritual moment in there, though it seemed like a bit a cult to me. Though there were plenty of young western ladies who had joined up.........
Anyway photo's of these places have been updated.
So far no tummy trouble (hope this will last).
With hindsight I probably should have gone to Goa first for a bit of R&R before heading to the main cities.
Have a trip to the Golden Triangle (JAIPUR- AGRA- MATHURA) booked for early next week, then back to Delhi for Shiv's brothers wedding. Will then probably head to Mumbai before hitting the Goa beeches for what by then will be much needed relaxation.
I did want to keep this first update short and sweet! Ah well!
Hope all is well with everyone back in the UK :-)

Annaliese Sounds like an amazing adventure so far Jase. Did you take any pics of the amazing colours etc (not that I'd use them as inspiration for my collections at all, haha) India was never a place that was high on my agenda as a 'must go to' place, but after reading your first blog entry I may re-consider. Sounds like an experience never to be forgotten. Keep whatever little wits you have about you close and in good working order. Chat soon, take care x
