Jan's Travels
Managed a full day hike on the Franz Josef glacier. It was excellent! Got all the gear and got spikes to wear on our feet and boots! It wasn't as tough as I thought because the guide had to keep stopping to cut steps into the glacier as it changed daily. Managed to see and go in lots of crevices. Some of them were a bit of a squeeze and you were soaked rubbing agianst the ice.
Very proud of ourselves as we made it to the bottom, just as we were getting our spkies off we heard a rumble and a huge piece of ice fell from the front of the glacier and smashed, quite scary but cool to see.
Onto Queentown for 4 days. On the way we stopped off to watch the original AJ Hackett bungy site. Saw 2 people go over, I could never do it! They were dipped in the river. Colin, one of the guys from the bus was going to do a naked one if it was for free but it didn't happen!
Queenstown is not as big as I thought. Very busy withe the ski season and tempted to give snowboarding a go. Instead we walked to the top of the gondola ride (a tough hour) and did the luge. It's a three wheeled cart thing that you can zoom down a track on, was good fun. Managed to save ourselves a one way ticket to get back down the moutain by sneaking onto the gondola - backpacker traits are creeping in!
