The Tobago Keys are an hour north of Union Island. They surprised us as we were expecting the usual sand key and reef. However, there are about 6 small islands that make up the keys. The islands are now owned by SVG government and the area is an extensive marine park.
Before we enter the marine park Janet catches a 7 kilo Wahoo which we almost lost as the line was caught on the towed tender. However, Janet hung on and the result was fresh fish for dinner.
It is a very beautiful place at the Keys, with clear turquoise blue water, white sandy beaches and an extensive reef system.
There are many boats anchored here, including large sailing clippers. But, we manage to anchor away from the throng in a beautiful spot.
When we arrived it was very windy 25+ knots and the sea inside the reef was choppy, making it a bit unpleasant for snorkelling. We snorkelled on a good reef passage which was very interesting with lots of fish but not as much colourful coral as we have come to expect from our adventures in the pacific islands.
We have been weight training and doing yoga at the end of each day as it is cooler and less windy.
After our dinner of Jack Fish broth, and wok fried bait fish ( all delicious ), we would have liked to have fished off the back of the boat as there are so many fish swimming in the aft boat lights. However, as it is a marine park it is of course banned. So, we watched the great movie 'Les Miserables'.
We have been getting up very early, about 6 am for a swim and breakfast.
Today MB has booked a scuba dive. It is an excellent drift dive in a depth of about 20 metres. There are lots of fish including some 15 kilo Giant Barracuda, Snapper, Tuna, lots of bait fish, colourful reef and reef fish. Janet and Paul go snorkelling, finding two good sites. One has lots of turtles, the other having many fish varieties large and small, and large squid.
The afternoon, we are resting and completing our daily age quiz, very relaxing.
