Finally into South America, we flew into the capital of Peru, a place Jansen visited nine years ago. Perhaps it comes with travel experience, but the place seemed much tamer and far less intimidating than it did the first time.
Upon our airport arrival we paid a visit to the tourist information office. Our thoughts were to see if we could catch the local bus from the airport to the popular area of the city called Miraflores. We were warned at the office we'd have a very tough time unless we spoke fluent Spanish and it was far better for us to take a cab. We decided this was probably far too conservative, and it turned out the bus was incredibly easy, very cheap, almost as fast as a cab, and our very limited Spanish didn't hold us back at all.
Lima is a city where you need to pick your spots. Miraflores and the historic centre are definitely nice to check out for their architecture and buzz, but on the whole it's noisy, choked with traffic and not particularly appealing.
