We had a fantastic time in beautiful, chilled out Luang Prabang from breakfasts overlooking the Mekong River to post midnight ten pin bowling. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and celebrated our five year anniversary with a trip to a waterfall where we climbed through a deserted area to find our own little rock pools, followed by some great value cocktails and a night out on the town.
In the evenings the place to go is Utopia Bar which is full of hippy style mats and little hidden tables amongst the lantern filled trees. Both nights we were there we bumped into travellers we had met all through South East Asia so we swapped stories and got helpful information for our onward journey and generally enjoyed the social scene. All the bars close at midnight but curiously a bowling alley, about 4 km out of the town centre, stays open until about 4am so everyone heads there for heavy drinking with a spot of light bowling on the side.
In the mornings and afternoons, before the drinking starts, Utopia Bar holds yoga sessions overlooking the river. It seemed to be the thing to do amongst the hippy, expat crowd in Luang Prabang so Sonja thought she would give it a go. Not having done yoga before, it was quite challenging but a wonderful way to start a morning while Jansen enjoyed some extra sleep before breakfast.
