Corfu is not exactly as I expected. Beautiful, yes, but possibly more beautiful from off-shore than on-shore. The water of the Ionian Sea is marvelously clear. Even walking along the pier, the water is perfectly clear. And as it deepens, the color takes on the very best deep shade of indigo.

We opted out of any ship-sponsored excursion and found the bus to take us to the beach. We traveled the road along the north shore to Dasia and found a sleepy resort area where there were small hotels, restaurants and a nice beach of soft gravel and colorful pebbles like river rock. We couldn't help gathering a handful of the prettiest ones we could find to take home. We had to re-board the ship at 3 pm, so our stay was not very long. No time for calamari today! As the ship began leaving port, we walked the full deck several times taking in the freshly made air and getting a bit of exercise while admiring the view of the arid and lonely-looking Greek coast.
