We arrived after noon on August 13 via train through the Champagne Region. It was a beautiful day and the city was so gorgeous with flowers, arched bridges crossing the river and pretty buildings, we decided to walk the 20 minutes to our apartment. We finally figured out that Oldtown Strasbourg is an island. Yes, we nearly circled it before we found our apartment. Oldtown is surrounded by the River L'Ill which is lined with ancient buildings that now house outdoor bars and restaurants at the street or river level.
We are so fortunate! We arrived in the midst of summer festival -- entertainment everywhere. And, it's nothing like we've ever seen before . . . . music and fireworks, acrobatics, magic shows, and lights illuminating the Cathedral. But even without the ongoing festival, the city is something to behold -- old ancient wealth -- dating back to 11th century. All the buildings - a mixture of French, Swiss and German styles built, preserved, embellished, restored, maintained and cherished for hundreds of years.
We celebrated our first full Day in Strasbourg with a dinner of Fish Choucroute (fish with sauerkraut), the region's specialty, accompanied by a carafe of Alsatian Riesling!! It was fabulous. We were told that it's the sauce that makes the dish! But it could be the wine.
