Travelled east of Lancaster into the farmland worked by the Amish. A really special day with a variety of experiences. Drove off the main tourist route and saw farms, buggies, a school with children out playing games at break time and men ploughing the fields with teams of eight horses. Hello Lancaster A five hour drive with stops but the Interstate is good - came through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and then into Pennsylvania. Rest areas are so clean and pleasant. Facilities good with information leaflets etc. Enjoyed the trip. Arrived at hotel easily, thanks to satnav. We have been upgraded to a suite! It is certainly bigger than any flat I've lived in and I think bigger than my first house in Derby. The hotel is a converted tobacco war...

Goodbye Virginia. Spent Thursday on the Blue Ridge Parkway and went up to Wintergreen, a ski resort. Some of the owned properties there are awesome. Must sleep 20. Other places are time share. They don't get a lot of snow there but when they do it's a very popular area. Seemed very wooded and certainly lovely views. We had a good last day on Friday with a run in the local recreation area before another trip to the Launderette and then out to the Walton's Mount...

Washington has been absolutely amazing. The best city either of us have ever been to. Packed so much into our four days. Started with a walk to the White House and the Washington Memorial on Tuesday after good journey by Amtrack. Hotel fabulous, updated to executive package with breakfast, soft drinks and snacks at tea time. a real bonus. Lovely room, two blocks from White House. Another beautiul day and we've already walked miles including a visit to Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Love Park and walked across town from one river to the other. Labour Day means it's a real holiday atmosphere but much more relaxed than NYC. Just eaten the hottest turkey sandwich, chilli sauce is their pickle of choice and washed it down with root beer!
