We were up at 6am and on a shuttle bus to Melbourne airport. Our flight stopped off at Perth for a few hours before connecting to Broome. We were sad not seeing Perth, but were in much need of some hot weather! After plenty of card games at Perth airport, we were back on the plane heading north to Broome. We saw a beautiful red sunset on the plane out of our window, and a full orange moon out of the other side of the plane just as we were coming in to land. A little taste of one of WA's beautiful sunsets! We were greeted by incredible heat as we stepped off the plane and just smiled at each other. It had been a long time since we had felt that sort of heat.
Our hostel for the week was more of a holiday resort. Although we had an 8 bed dorm, the layout was all outdoors with a bar and a swimming pool and very relxaed atmosphere.
We really did very little whilst in Broome. It was a much needed holiday break for us, and a great place to start our last 4 weeks in Australia. Most of the days were spent lying on Cable Beach and swimming in the warm azure sea. If we were not on the beach or by the swimming pool, we were wandering around the town called 'Chinatown', although having nothing Chinese about it.
We were lucky enough to be in Broome for a full moon too. During the dry season, and over a few days every month when there is a full moon, the whole town (and all the tourists) head to the beach on the east side of Broome. The reason for this is when the moon rises over the mud flaps it creates a magical illusion of there being a staircase to the moon. It was quite incredible and only something that can really be appreciated by seeing it in person (or unless you have a unbelievably good camera, which we didnt).
The one other thing we did whilst in Broome, that was easily Kirsty's highlight, was the camel ride along Cable Beach at sunset. Although the whole thing seemed a little touristy, it was obviously touristy for a reason. We had a 2 hour walk along the beach, which after a little while became quite uncomfortable, but was a very relaxing walk, with obviously a beautiful sunset.
Before our week in laid-back Broome came to an end, we made a point of going to the oldest open air cinema in the world (apparantly). It was excellent! We sat in deck chairs watching the film whilst bats and the occasional plane would fly overhead. A great night and a good way to end our stay in Broome.
Our next stop was further north to the tropical city of Darwin.
