We said our goodbyes to New Zealand and flew to Sydney on Wed 10th February! After seeing Australia's east coast from plane, littered with beaches, we were pretty excited about being here when we landed!
Our excitement was halted for a little bit as we had to wait for what seemed like hours, for our shuttle to the hostel. It was pretty cheap so we couldn'y really complain. Our hostel, The Blue Parrot, was situated in Potts Point right on the cusp of Kings Cross. We weren't really aware of what Kings Cross was like before we arrived, but soon figured, when we had a look around that night, that it was the sleazier part of Sydney. But not really a bad sleazy, because we never felt threatened, and although there strip joints and odd people walking around, it did have some fancier places too. It wasn't boring at least.
The next day we walked into the the city centre and sorted out our Aussy bank account!! That done, we did the touristy thing and walked down to the Harbour Bridge and The Opera House, which really did look like the postcards! They were beautiful. We walked around by 'The Rocks' and made our way back to the hostel, sweating from the heat, which we were not used to at all! That night met some cool German guys (Daniel & Pascal) and drank some VB's with them.
The following day it was even hotter, we'd barely left the hostel and were sweating one out, I don't think Kirsty had ever sweated that much in her life. We walked through the botanical gardens, which were incredible, and there was even a tree full of hundreds and hundreds of bats!! During the day too! It was completely bizarre, and they were huge too, im not sure if the pics will show them too well...but it was really quite cool. We then went to Wildlife World, by Darling Harbour, and saw every spider, snake, crocodile that could kill us while we're here. Was good to see what we need to look out for, we also saw the nicer animals up close, like kangaroos, koalas, wallabies and wombats! It was really good.
We met up with Matt, Lauren and baby Michaela whilst here too. They picked us up from our hostel and drove us to the other side of Harbour bridge, where there are some amazing views of Sydney, and we walked back across the bridge and had a pint at a nice bar. It also happened to be Valentines weekend, so there were a million and one married couples around doing wedding pictures! It was hectic! Matt and Lauren then took us for a really nice Indonesian just out of Sydney. We sat outside under a marquee type thing while it absolutely chucked it down, all good though because the food was lovely. We said our goodbyes to them and will hopefully being seeing them again at theirs in Wollongong, when we start driving round.
Our last day in Sydney, and Valentines Day, we spent at the zoo. Seeing more animals than we have ever seen in any zoo we have ever been to, Toronga Zoo was pretty impressive. Ended the day by going for a Mexican that night (Kirstys favourite)!
The next day we got the shuttle (no waiting around this time) to the airport. The most random thing happened, a girl (Charlotte) we met from a hostel in Wellington, New Zealand got on!! It was madness, we said hello and goodbye again at the airport. She was flying back to England and we were flying to Tasmania.
