Jamie and Marc Conquer the World!
Merry Xmas,
Thursday11th/Friday 12th October- We arrived in KL late on Thursday night so we thought we would take a walk down to the "Twin Towers" (Petronas) as we wanted to visit them the next day and they only give out 1400 tickets each day so we were adamant that we would be first in the queue. So off we went POWER WALKING down to the towers just so we never got lost the next morning, it was about a 25 minute walk from our hostel. The "Twin Towers" or the Petronas Towers (their proper name)was the largest building in the world up until 2 years ago, they 451m high and a sky bridge joins them on the 46th floor.
They are owned by the oil company "Patronas". Some of you may recall them from the film "Entrapment" which stared Catherine Zeta Jones and Sean Connery... As we said they give out 1,400 passes so you have to be down early to get one.
We were up at the crack of dawn, had brekkie then rushed down to the towers all excited to get a ticket, Chuffed thinking that we were the first people there....WOO HOO we thought.....Yeah you have probably guessed they were CLOSED...WHAT, we were very disappointed, not only were they closed that day they were closed for 4 days, the reason for this was "Hari Raya."
Total Bummer!! Anyway to cheer ourselves up we thought we would go to Genting theme park which is just outside KL. So we got in a taxi and set off to Genting, it was cooking hot when we left KL, little did we know that Genting was on top of a mountain 1,600 meters high, it was the most peculiar place to put a theme park. We were level with the clouds and as you could imagine not quite as warm as at ground level, however as the Theme park was indoor as well as out door, it was a good excuse to do a spot of shopping in the diesel shop, YIP PIE our favourite shop, added bonus was that it was cheaper than at home!!
Apart from Marc nearly having a heart attack on one of the rides it was a really good day. Some fantastic thrill rides, the corkscrew was terrifying but brilliant. When we got back to KL that night we continued our addiction for Indian food and had yet another Tandoori, not as amazing as Penang but still very tasty.
Saturday 13 October - Today was the end of the Muslim fast and it was officially Hari Raya. In otherwards XMAS and New Year. The streets were very colourful, lots of xmas lights and decorations. So myself and Jamie headed to the PM's open house to celebrate, Mrs Walker ( my old R.E teacher) would have been so proud. Everyone from babies to the elderly turned out in their Sunday best, Most of them were immaculate! We met the PM, who asked were we were from and what we were doing in KL, then after we wished each other a "HAPPY HARI RAYA" we were invited to have big lunch and a sing song. This was probably one of the most weird but good experience yet!. After all the festive activites we headed for some more theme park fun, this time indoors at "Time Square", a massive shopping mall. 3 floors of the mall are occupied by a theme park which has the Longest Indoor Roller Coaster in the world (800m). FUN FUN FUN, we had a blast. Big kids, yeah so what??
Sunday 14th October - When we got up on Sunday morning and the sun was shining we decided that we would go to Sunway Lagoon, a massive water park and shopping complex with an ice rink. We jumped in a taxi and headed for the park. Just before we were there we asked the driver to stop at the ATM,(cash machine) so he did. Previous to this we had accrued a few banking problems in Malaysia, just putting the card in asking for money, the bank rejecting saying contact your branch, blah blah blah.. Its not the best thing when you only have 1 card between the 2 of you! Malaysia banks seem to be a bit behind. Anyway this problem re accrued outside "Sunway Lagoon " as we tried to get cash to pay the taxi driver. We had no money on us our card wouldn't work and our hostel was a good half hour taxi journey away....HELP! Of course I blamed Marc and he blamed me, why didn't we have any money on us??....AAhhhhhh
The taxi driver took us back to the hostel where thankfully we had some Auzzie Dollars $$ (which I told Marc to carry on him at all times following our previous banking problems,so it was his falut!) So we were able to exchange them, however because it was Sunday and still celebrations for "Hari Raya" we struggled to find anywhere to change them!! SCREAM, Thankfully a man opened his shop and changed them, we reckon he probably ripped us off. So we went and paid the taxi driver, and by this time it was to late to go back to the water park...NIGHTMARE! Half a day wasted because of the bank, i shall be looking to sue!
Instead of the water park we ended up going to the KL tower, the 3rd tallest telecommunications tower in the world, got some nice panoramic view of the city. On Sunday night Jamie left the hostel to make a few phone calls (Happy Birthday Kirsteen and Downie) while I enjoyed a few beers with some of the boys at the hostel. When she returned she was all excited. On her way to the phone shop she seen a guy who she thought was on stilts, there was a lot of commotion as a few dozen people crowded around him, she headed over to see what all the commotion was about. Well it was not a man on stilts, it was actually the Tallest Man in the World, he is doing some kind of tour. He is a Korean man coming in at a whopping 8ft 4 Inches. Probably the only time Jamie has not had the camera to take a few snap shots, although there is some footage on her phone. Pretty Cool....Thankfully it wasn't the world's smallest man, cause as most of you know she would have FREAKED and probably would have returned crying. ha ha ha
After Jamie had calmed down she joined myself and a few of the other guys and gals for some drinks. Then we all headed out on the town. We went to a nightclub called "Zouk", very famous in Asia. We had previously bought tickets as that night "ARMIN VAN BUREN" was pumping out some TUNES, was a quality night apart from me Breaking Jamies bracelet that she bought in Penang and me having to go home a bit early for being too drunk, OOppppsss, anyway great night with some excellent company and a great laugh.
So back to the broken bracelet, you remember us telling you about Jim, the crazy Indian man from Penang?? His slogan was "Jim I'll fix it" (how original) anyway he is gonna to go to the place in Penang where a wee Chinese guy made Jamie that bracelet and get her another one then send it over to Oz for her. Dude! As you can imagine Jamie is a happy little bunny and the heat is take away from me...
Whils in KL that Sunday evening we bumped into two girls we had met in Thailand, we all stayed in the same hostle and spent some time together, nuts. This has actually happened to us a few times now. It would be like you guys going on holiday to Italy and meeting a few folk then the next month going on holiday to France and bumping into the same people...MAD
We went out with Micky and Claire in Koh Phangan one night then met them Randomly in Penang again. CRAZY! Great though as we have met in with heaps of brilliant people who we have already made arrangement so see again at some point in OZ, that's if we don't bump into them before then...
Monday 15th October- I (Marc) woke up with a sore head and no memory of getting home, Jamie woke up annoyed cause I had broken her bracelet...but after I made her Brekkie and apologised she forgave me. Thank god for Jim!!
We decided to have round 2 with the water park, I figured it would be a good way to spend the day hungover. This time with no problems, we arrived at Sunway Lagoon. woo hoo. There is a huge wave pool where you can surf, Only on Saturday and Sunday but no one told us this so i was rather teethed off. The water park was good though, Although it is pretty strange when everyone apart from me and Jamie was fully clothed in the water. Its all to do with their religion etc, really uncomfortable for us though as everyone was staring at us as if we were the abnormal ones, lots of guys asking to take Jamie's picture and stuff! Also it didn't help when Jamie came off one of the rides with half her bikini off and her nipple out!!
The people of Malaysia are very very different to the Thais. Cant say to much cause i would probably get jailed but think its obviously to do with their religion. Its is like we are famous in the part of the world, so many people want there photo with us, or more just with Jamie, it's pretty creepy really,....SORRY don't want to offend so I shall say no more, also Jamie will give me into trouble for discrimination and we don't want that!
The water park was fab. That evening we met up with Devon and Kate (the two Canadian girls that we became friends with in Thailand) and we all went for an Indain...AGAIN. Anyway we were not given plates, instead our food was served on a banana leaf and we used our hand to eat, lots of fab food and amazing bread. MMMmmmmm
Tuesday 16 th- Our last day in KL and the Petronas (twin towers) were opened after being closed for Hari Raya, HURRAH we were up and away with our two Canadian buddies and at the towers for 8am. It was just aswell as there were lots of people already there waiting on tickets. We queued for about an hour taking a 15 minute turn at standing. Then we were givin our slot which was 12.15pm so with a few hours to kill we just had a browse in some shops and caught some rays in the gardens outside. Oh forgot to say when I was in the queue for the tickets, Marc went for a seat and bumped into 3 boys from Dundee, it was the first scots we have met since leaving home, and they were from DUNDEE! ha ha, so it turns out that they are also going to Perth next week so Marc took their number and we are going to meet up for a few beers with them.
Anyway 12.15pm we headed up to the 46th floor and captured some magnificent views of the city, WOW factor. We took a few photos and came back down. (as you will see lots of pic of the twin towers, I do apologise if you get bored but they were stunning and im sure no picture will let you understand how fantastic they were at night)
After lunch we headed to the 4th floor of the towers where there is a science centre, also a helicopter simulated which takes you to a make shift oil rig, so when we stepped out the other side of the simulator I thought I was on the Ninias we Eddie, Jimmy, Lok, Murph, Stuche, Oh and Keithy obviously was there. Got my covvies and hard had on and Just started telling everyone I worked in Wire line but specialised in fishing!!! Spagning away. It was quality not sure if Jamie was as excited. There was even sleeping quarters, guess who was in there? Beatle, slept in and his shift partner was going ebshiute nuts, think his shift partners was Wayney, Guess where he was? in the canteen.
After a few hours on the rig it was a nice feeling managing to just walk back out into the real world. It was our last night in KL so we went downtown Chinatown got some grub and had a look around before writing this while awaiting on the bus for Singapore.
Off to Singapore for another adventure,
Marc and Jamie
