Jamie and Marc Conquer the World!
Hey Kids,
Saturday 12th July, We arrived back in La Paz and had arranged to meet Ethan (our American Buddy) at Plaza San Fran so he could take us to the Hostel. We met him and made our way to El Salario which was a very cheap and basic hostel, (1pound 50p a night!!) On the way to the hostel we bumped into Ged and Keira another Scottish couple we met in Fiji. We knew they were going to South America but they were doing a complete different route from us, so we didn't think we would see them again never mind literally bumping into them!! Anyway we arranged to meet them that night and go for a few drinks and something to eat that evening.
Ged and Keira suggested an India restaurant that they had already eaten at and said it was really good. It turned out to be a really fancy Indian which cost about $8 each which is classed as expensive for Bolivia!! So so so tasty and well worth the splurge! After the Indian we hit the pub for the rest of the night. As you can imagine 4 Scots together it was carnage!!
Sunday 13th July, We woke up both feeling a little ropey from the night before so went to the plaza for a fresh smoothie, cost 25p!! As it was a really nice day we sat at the Plaza for hours, read our books and chilled. A wee cutie was really taken with Marc, the little Bolivian Amigo must have been about 3 years old. He came over to where we were sitting and was trying to climb onto Marc´s knee...Ahhh, next thing his family were all around us taking pictures, then when it was time to go the wee man was howling..So cute though, just like all of the Bolivian children, adorable! That evening we went with Ethan to the cinema to watch Hancock....STRANGE movie!
Monday 14th, not a great day! We spent most of the day in the Internet cafe trying to get flights to Columbia but it was proving to be far to expensive. We decided that busing it was the only way forward. That evening we went to the Arabic restaurant for dinner, again much cheapness and very very tasty!
Tuesday 15th, We went to San Pedro prison, probably the strangest tourist attraction we have encountered on the whole of our trip! Jamie and I had both read the book, "Marching Powder! which is about this unbelievably corrupt prison in La Paz - Bolivia. So after reading the book we were eager to visit and see for ourselves. As its the most corrupt prison in the world, you have to pay to get in and its not cheap, out $30 US dollars each which is expensive for Bolivia. The tour is guided by prisoners who have to pay for EVERYTHING in the prison, including cells...you would have to read the book to understand. The Prisoners tell you their stories and show you around part of the prison. Half of the money that you pay to get in is given to the Prison Guards as a bribe. Whilst we were there they told us that they had received over 3000 tourists in the past 3 months. Thankfully we didn't encounter any trouble and most of the Prisoners were really friendly. We stayed in "Prison" for a couple of hours, had dinner then met some people at Oliver's Travels for a couple of beers. Interesting and strange day!
Wednesday 15th, Jamie woke up in the middle of the night and was feeling really ill, she was sick a about 20 times, and kept rushing to the toilet! She had only had a couple of drinks the night before so we didn't think it could be a hang over and as the day went on she became more and more ill, stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhoea!...Turned out to be "FOOD POISONING"!!!!! so all day Wednesday and Thursday were spent in bed. I managed to get Jamie some medication but she was unable to keep anything down so it was just a matter of time.
Thursday 16th, FOOD POISONING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Friday 17th, Jamie was feeling a little better so I suggested we left La Paz and head to Copacabana which is a little town that sits on Lake Titikaka. Turned out we probably left La Paz a bit early as Jamie became unwell again on the bus..Oops! When we arrived in Copacabana Jamie was still feeling a little ill so we went for a nap. I was starving so we went to the near by restaurant, J could only manage a cup of tea but I had Lasagna. As Jamie was still pretty unwell it was an early night for us. We didn`t mind much as we booked into our own room with an amazing view and own bathroom/toilet, bit of a splurge, we needed the upgrade with Jamie being ill. They even provided us with a nice hot watter bottle which was just the ticket!
Not the best start to Copacabana....Surely things can only get better???? Or Can they??
Hasta la vista baby,
Marc and Jamie xxxx
