The temples of Angkor Wat are Cambodia's tourist wildcard. Siam Reap, the closest city to the temples does a good job of catering for every type of tourist. We stayed a little out of the city centre at Hak's house. It was great value for money, although at lime a little aloof Hak was helpful.
We followed Rob's advice and forked out for a tuk tuk tour. We made it for sunrise and were not disappointed with the magical views. Hues of red and gold permeated the skyline, and highlighted the famous Angkor Wat shadow. The only minor complaint was the amount of other tourists. I am not sure what we were expecting; it is the place to see in Cambodia.
Our driver was good and we managed to visit all of the main temples by about 11am! By this point we were both exhausted-a combination of the night bus and a 4:30am rise. We stopped for a spot of lunch and had a relaxing afternoon.
James had an exciting proposition whilst getting a drink from the hostel bar. A local guy smiled at him, pointed at his computer which, to James's dismay was playing Gay porn! James politely refused and I tried not to leave his side for the rest of our stay-ha, I found it highly amusing.
We had bought a 3 day pass to Angkor Wat complex so the next two days we enjoyed more of a lie in and took our $1 a day bikes around the temples and the city. After James's experience in Kyoto on a mountain bike we both chose the more comfortable option. We both really enjoyed the biking as most of Siam Reap is flat and the roads are well paved.
Our highlights were the tomb raider temple, Angkor Wat on the 3rd day at 12:30 the only time it was reasonably empty and the view from Phnom Bakheng temple overlooking Angkor Wat and the surrounding jungle.
We managed to survive the days on the free hostel breakfast, a baguette, a bottle of water and a packet of crisps between us. We were then allowed to splash out a bit on food and drink in the evening.
We chose restaurants in and around Pub Street and met a cool Israeli couple who have just started their big trip.
On the last night I almost ran over a girl who I know through Kirsty and she also went to Loughborough-such a small world!
We probably could have stayed a few more days biking around the temples but a three day pass was expensive enough and it was time for another bus journey as we made our way closer to the Laos border.
