Kratie (pronounced kraa-chee) is a small sleepy town on the banks of the Mekong River with a few hotels and restaurants. Our journey from Siam Reap was a long one, taking over 3 hours then we had expected on a less than comfortable bus with about a million mosquitos. Our hostel was OK but had one of the lumpiest mattresses we have experienced so it was lucky we were exhausted from the bus journey.
We did a lot of wandering and relaxing in the town and took a boat across the river to the island Koh Trong for a bike trip along the Mekong discovery trail. The bikes were cheap and cheerful and we took our time slowly biking around the untouched island. Most of the ride was peaceful and uneventful. We stopped at a lovely upmarket restaurant for a drink and then encountered a moment of danger with an angry dog, he was not happy with our presence outside his house.
We wanted to go further afield and my bum was so sore from our cycling adventure the day before we decided to get a motorbike. We rode through villages past temples and stopped to catch a boat on the river to see the Mekong river dolphins. We hadn't heard great reviews about the dolphins but we thoroughly enjoyed our hour on the boat. We got to see them for about 45 minutes, and at times they came within 10 metres of the boat. We stopped at a temple on the top of a hill, Buddhist love making you go for a short hike! The temple was empty, with two monks milling around and the temple was nice enough but the views were worth the walk up.
