Singapore is living up to its name - because every night I hear these guys and girls snoring, I contemplate the ultimate sin and smothering them with a pillow. After I get out of Singapore, it's hotels for the rest of the Asia leg of my trip. At least now, it's only one person with the nasal ramblings all night long. He's right above me, so every time he starts snoring, I kick the bottom of his bed, careful not to snap the pine boards holding up his bunk. It startles the Asian awake, and for 20 or so minutes, peace and quiet.
When I'm not contemplating instituting a new law in Singapore decreeing death for snorers - I have been searching the city for adventure. I strolled over to the Marina Bay Sands hotel, this crazy looking building that looks like a giant fish on top of three giant pillars. During the day, it looks incredible, but a British couple I met tell me to come back at night for the light show, as it is even more incredible.
I have grown tired of the smells of Chinatown, and have moved to a new hostel called Travellers@SG. A much better hostel, as there is a large lounge area for people to meet up, drink beer, and just chill. Just outside of Little India, this hostel is in a quiet neighborhood at night, and a stone's throw to the Jalan Besar stadium. I feel almost connected with this stadium. I wonder when there'll be a game?
On Friday, I reluctantly go out to hang with with Jessica, avery plain girl from Vermont who just finished her PA schooling and is enjoying some time off before starting work, and Alex, a 6'5" german bloke of a very lean stature, rather than go somewhere else alone. The three of us figure on hitting up the Marina Bay Sands hotel to see the often-recommended light show, grabbing some grub near there, and finding a pub to down a Tiger Beer. As we're walking thru the hotel and its adjoining mall (the swankiest hotel I've ever been in, with rooms costing AT LEAST $500 / night, and most over $1000 / night), I'm pointing out the hookers and escorts to Alex and Jessica. It was very obvious -- a 50-something year old man with a gorgeous 22 year old Asian woman -- how Alex couldn't see it was beyond me. Jessica and I were both disgusted by these women, while at the same time I found myself visually stunned by how beautiful these women were and understood how thee old farts could be paying $500 - $1000 / night for such a woman. But I wouldn't do such a thing. Would I? Could the temptation be too great even for me and my thrifty sense? I'm sticking with no. I tell Jessica no. But...
The light show is a scant 15 minutes long, and I was thoroughly unimpressed. I find a Malaysian restaurant offering up braised intestines and couldn't help but give it a shot. Okay, I'm lying -- it sounded disgusting, but people were eating it up. I went with a tamer duck / noodle combo, which was awesome. Jessica goes with a rice/ bbq pork plate. Alex, however, wanted to be a little more bold and ordered laksa, not knowing that it was a super-spicy dish. He hadn't ordered a drink, and his face was on fire within seconds. He was starving though, and kept eating - all without having anything to drink to sooth the fire. Jessica's spewing food out of her mouth from the laughter, and after just five or six bites, Alex gave up, his face red, profusely sweating, the few dashes of curry having conquered the German behemoth.
As if it wasn't funny enough to watch this, Alex was still hungry, and got a second dish. Idiot that he was, he went with something he didn't know, and got something even spicier. Again, Jessica and I just laugh.
We grab a beer at a nearby pub and share in a glass of Tiger Beer. s***ty beer, but it's a Singapore favorite. The place is crawling with Asians for some reason, and the price for beer was too expensive, so we leave.
As we get back home to our temporary abode, I see that the lights at the Jalan Besar stadium are on. Turns out that there was a big futbol (soccer) match) at the Jalan Besar stadium, Singapore v. Malaysia, and was a 1-0 thriller. I would have loved to have seen that match - especially for the meager $5 entry fee. Oh well, there's always next time.
I have decided to stay in Singapore a few more days than expected, as I have found a quite nice hostel to enjoy. I'll be taking the train up to Malaysia -- and will hopefully find some slightly better weather and some hotel accommodations for just one. I would kill for a solid night of snore-free sleep.
