We decide to stay another night at the campsite as we can't get a booking for the Barrier Reef until Thursday anyway - the weathers been awful - thunder storms and rain so with Wednesday and Thursday looking brighter the trips are getting booked out.
We head off in search of Port Douglas, North of Cairns. It's a 90 minute drive and the views are stunning on route, Matt can't get over the roads and how he has less road rage because it's so well signposted and people seem generally quite respectful.
When on route, we met Karl the busker from Birmingham. Karl has travelled nonstop for a few years now and has some great stories, but we get the impression his family haven't seen him for years.
We arrive in Port Douglas and are immediately taken by how touristy it is, like a very up market resort for boating types who wear their tweed jumpers draped over their shoulders and crisp white pressed chino shorts from Ralph Lauren. We nosey around the shops, souvenir type shops a plenty, we do a mini shop at Coles groceries and grab some gourmet bangers at Malones butchers.
We head for the harbour and compare prices for trips to the reef from port Douglas - it's an average of $220 each for a trip - which is pretty much what we will pay with reef magic who depart from Cairnsmadness! It's really hard to seperate holiday from travelling - holiday means you don't care and will spend what you like as it's a one off treat, travelling definitely has more hassle with it - you have to weigh a lot up and sacrifice things as there's no way you can afford to do all the amazing things on offer. But there's no way well compromise on the reef.
We leave Port Douglas and head back to the site stopping on the beach for half an hour to sit and have a cheeky glass of vino.
When we get back we spend the night playing cards outdoors covered in deet hoping to avoid the Mosquitos.
