As the name suggests, Costa Rica is an expensive country. I tried to save a bit by choosing to sleep in a hammock for only $5. It all worked out apart from the fact that I couldn´t really sleep in it. Puerto Viejo is apparently one of the best party locations in Central America but strangely everywhere seemed to be closed by midnight and the only party around after that was people getting stoned on the beach. In fact everyone seemed to want nothing more than to get stoned all day and bore all the other people by talking about nothing more than smoking weed.
Partying aside for a moment, the place almost made up for it during the day. Really good beaches were directly behind the hostel and we were able to hire bicycles very cheaply to explore the area. People here are also much friendlier than they were in Panama and the food is very tasty too.
Apart from lazing on the beach, we also went on a canopy tour, where we take zip wire through the cloud forest and hopefully see wildlife. All we saw was a sloth which was even more inert than would be expected. It took a while for us to spot it as it looks like a branch and didn´t move an inch. At least speeding down the zip lines narrowly avoiding the trees was far more exciting than this pathetic creature.
