Day 2
Sett off from Union City headed for Montgomery, Alabama.
We decided not to use the main freeway but travel the 160 miles or so using the old highway.
What a good choice that tuned out to be. Probably an hour or so longer but through lovely countryside.
We changed time zones as we crossed the stateline into Alabama and only noticed when we checked to see our arrival time.
Stopped for lunch at The General's Diner in New Site and it was excellent.
Arrived in Montgomery and after checking in went out to see what Saturday night had to offer downtown.
Whether we were out too early or not it was fairly quiet.
A very nice riverside with Mississippi riverboat and fairly compact city centre.
Beer and cocktails time in The Alley then food at Jalapeños.
Came out to a thunderstorm which put the satnav out so we blundered about in the dark and rain but found our way home.
Day 3 Sunday 5th June
Montgomery appears to be closed!
Tourist office shut so we got a map from a hotel and set off for a historical walk.
Very interesting history to the city, encompassing the slave and cotton trade (big links with Manchester) and the massive part it played in the civil rights movement in the 60's.
Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King
Had an interesting encounter in Walmart when I got propositioned by a beggar on an invalidity scooter claiming her husband had left her with 6 kids and no food.
A similar but slightly more scary incident later in the day when we pulled into a car park to check out a restaurant and a guy tried to block us in and beg some money for petrol.
"Sorry, no cash, only cards" foot down and off.
Had probably our worst meal for years in an Italian restaurant, The Olive Tree.
I'm sure we'll look back and laugh!
Montgomery Inn and Suites has been a great choice to stay by the way.
Off to The Big Easy tomorrow
