Hi All,
This will be my last blog entry in Indonesia...I fly to KL in Malaysia tonight for one night and to Phuket in Thailand on Tuesday! I have had the best time so far in Bali and we're only really leaving today because of our visas :( Hopefully will come back when I get enough money (if i ever do!).
Anyway so we last left off when I got back from our amazing road trip around Bali. Since then, a lot of our friends who we made out here have left and moved onto Australia which is really upsetting.
So back to the original group...Me, Olivia, Fizz, Jasper, Alex, Seb...and a few extras...Seb's bro and friend and Albie...we all left Kuta for a few days as everyone (bar me and Olivia) are keen surfers, so we stayed in Uluwatu. We arrived at Padang Padang Inn, a nice little homestay with simple rooms (no sink?) but nice and cheap. After a nap we all went out for dinner at a cool (but overpriced) diner and watched a film (with Jonathon Rhys Meyers, yum!).
The next morning we awoke to loads of noise, people running about and a dog barking it's head off. I had the worst nights sleep (i'm ill) and was getting very annoyed. Just started slipping in my earplugs to go back to sleep when Olivia got up to suss everything out. She smelt smoke. Next thing I know, Seb has run into our room shouting that we have to get out because the hotel reception is on fire, and they were worried it was going to spread through the trees to the block we were all sleeping in! Aahh! He shouted 'GRAB YOUR STUFF AND GET OUT' so while Fizz was running around screaming 'I'M NAKED! I'M NAKED!' and Olivia was packing her sunglasses, chargers, EVERY item she brought with her...i grabbed my bag with passport and camera and ran out. Because I am sensible. The fire was huge, and had spread through the hotel reception, a mexican restaurant, an internet cafe and a surf shop. It was really upsetting because it was also the families home, and we watched them trying to rescue as much as they could...pulling out their beds, cupboards, desks from this burning building. Women were sobbing, sat on their piles of clothes whilst the men ran around with tiny buckets of water and squabbling over a little hose. The fire brigade turned up about an hour later. Basically, men with helmets and a slightly more powerful hose. Luckily no-one was hurt, but was an eventful morning!
We moved to another homestay, overlooking a quiet beach. We had two rooms, side by side and a huge balcony where you can watch the sunset. It was really nice. Unfortunately for me and Olivia, we just got bored. It was too hot to lie on the beach and we needed to be more central, so the next day we left for Kuta.
Two days later, Olivia, Fizz and I were on the fast boat to the Gili Islands. A small Island that looks like paradise...and i know i've said that before but this was something else. The kind of water no-one believes is real and you just see on postcards was at this island...light aqua blue. We stayed at a lovely place, huge pool and little huts everywhere. We didn't stay in a hut though :( But our room was cool with an outside shower and toilet? Except we were showering and brushing our teeth in saltwater...
The Gili Islands have no motorised transport, just bicycles and horse and carts. Everything (restaurants, bars, hotels, shops) were all along one strip of road. There was some great luxury accommodation which one day when i'm rich and famous, I will stay in. Staying on the Gili's was like having a holiday...away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta and just relaxing the whole trip. The highlight for me was snorkelling. You just have to hire a snorkell and swim out about 30 secs and you're swimming with tropical, exotic fish (the kind you see in Finding Nemo!). There were electric blue little fish swimming around together, a bright blue starfish, rainbow coloured fish, amazing coral and the best of all...TURTLES! It was amazing. I did drink a lot of saltwater though, because i'm an idiot and can't snorkell. We had a couple of great nights out (The boys came out the day after us), lots of dancing and singing and I have lost my voice for the second time in about 2 weeks!
Now we're back in Kuta, preparing everything for the flight tonight. Boring things like trying to upload photos to facebook (so many and the internet here is SO slow), picking up laundry (worried all my clothes will come back ruined) and buying stuff!
Will update anyone interested when i'm in Thailand, wish me luck! Byee!
