Gili Islands - three small islands northwest of Lombok. By fast boat, only two or three hours away from Bali Kuta area, depending on the weather conditions. A heavy sea made the journey quite bumpy on the day I was on the boat to Gili Trawangan.
The afternoon sun is burning and I have to walk half around the island with my backpack to find a place to stay for a reasonable price. It became very touristic here in the last years, there are even bungalows with AC and Internet. I ended up at Sunset Bungalows, a nice and quiet place, but there is no comfort at all. Besides a bed, there is an open-air toilet and shower with sea water (salt), that's it. Joe who works at sunset, makes the best banana-pancake for breakfast which is included :)
I went for a snorkeling tour around Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. It was fantastic to see all the color full reefs, fishes and turtles.
The local food is great. Gado-Gado is a simple, but tasty and sometimes a bit spicy indonesian food made of steamed vegetables rice and a sweet peanut sauce.
The island is small, I could easy walk around in less then two hours. There are a couple of bars around, where all the tourists enjoy the nightlife with cheap alcohol and drinks. Just behind, in the village, the local people live a very basic life.
I could have easy spend some more days on this island, but I run out of money and there is no chance to get new cash here. After all, I have already a return ticket to Bali.
Bye Bye Gili Islands.
