Fraser Island....the best thing ive done in oz so far by far. Its the biggest sand island in the world and has forest covering, fresh water lakes, creeks, and big beaches!
Basically, you get put in groups of 10 or 11, get given camping gear, food, take your own alcohol, pile it on the roof of a big landcruiser, drive it on the barge. across the water and let loose on the island for three days.
Ours turned out to be a heap compared to the others so we affectionately named him rusty. He did the job, we hardly got stuck and had a pretty small fuel bill!
The island is really pretty but loads of fun as well, the driving bit is obviously cool (even though i wasnt allowed cos im under 21) but also - the wreck thats washed up on the beach, indian head which is a high point out into the see so which you can go up and see the dolphins, sharks and rays in the water below. i bumped into two girls i met on magnetic island up there so got one of them to write my name on the beach when she went down and i stayed up and photographed it.
Lake Mckenzie is probably the mpst beautiful, crystal clear fresh water lake with white sand banks, and the site of the must have fraser photo, where the group lies in the water facing the sand in a line with the lake and sky in the background.
Ely creek flows out onto the beach and you can walk up a little and then float back down and lake wobby is probably the most fun. there is a big sand dune to one side of it which was good to roll down into the water etc. its slowly filling the lake in though so it wont be there in 5-10 years apparantly.
the nights were cool aswell, set up camp and all sat around playing drinking games and looking at the stars, haha! no seriously, you wouldnt believe how clear the starts are on the island, its incredible, i saw two shooting stars as well!
its quite funny watching everyone take on roles when you start setting up camp, alpha males, cooks, complainers, back seat drivers...!
Played eat my box again and i did significantly better this time, first time i fell headfirst into the box on my first go, this time i was still there at the end, managing to pick up a flat piece of card about an inch wide! pro!
Also, you have to be 'dingo safe, yes yes yes' since if they start getting familiar with humans they have to be destroyed incase of attacks etc. we managed it ok but one camp left rubbish out and the camp got attacked.
got back in the afternoon to rainbow beach and then we all spent the evening in the bus stop over the road finishing off our drink since your not allowed it in the hostel, classy! good picture though.
