Im going to start todays blog with some history.. When I started planning my trip i knew i wanted to spend as little time as possible in Waikiki. This meant I would not have time to visit Pearl harbour. I did however read about it in my faithful lonely planet and was surprised to learn it could have been avoided apart from 2 pieces of human error :-( but more than that the ship that was sunk on the first round of attack went down so quickly that thousands drowned as they were trapped. I thought until i read this on the bbc site today (how apt!) it was all of them but it seems there are just a few hundred still waiting to be recovered. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-32313713
Anyway back to my trip! Today has probably been my least enjoyable day i feel stressed today as there are so many places i want to see but feel im rushing to see them all and not enjoying the journey in between. I will make sure that changes tomorrow!
I still love Maui it is brilliant. My day started strangely i didnt sleep well can you believe the sea was too loud! I then had to queue for a while for breakfast but i met some nice people in the queue from the mainland. One of the ladies could not get over that i was doing all of this on my own! She said I had balls, i dont think its that. For me i have been so desperate to come to hawaii that once i got the opportunity nothing was going to stop me :-)
After this I went and bought a rash
vest from the surf people to wear in the sea when teddy and i go swimming! I then headed over to the beginning of the Hana highway via kite beach and paia a hip town which was ace but more touristy than Wailuku yesterday.
By this time it was about 3pm so i started the drive in the Hana highway it covers 50 miles has 600 turns and 50 one lane bridges ! There are a number of waterfalls from the mountain and there is an irrigation system that helps water get to the sugar plantations in the middle of the island. Every bridge had a waterfall! There were trails and little villages and other attractions to see. At the end of the highway there is access to the extinct volcanoes. And if you believe the car hire companies you cannot go any further. However my host tells me it is fine!! To use the extra road. I am glad i did it and once again ive smashed it with the accommodation !
Tomorrow i am going to do a hike in the morning and then do nothing in the afternoon! Xx
