We took a day trip to Nimbin from Byron Bay. We had read that the journey was only going to take around an hour and abit. We went to a pub first which took around an hour, and then the Nimbin felt like an another hour. It was was obvious the pub got a cut of the money the tour company got for taking us there, but it also seemed to me that this pub was in the opposite direction to Nimbin. We also got diverted to go to a waterfall. Some people had thought they would be swimming in it, so were to bring their swimming gear when they read the itinerary for the day, but it turned out we were just to stare at it for half an hour. Maybe the people who arrange the tour thought we may have never seen a waterfall before.
Eventually when we arrived in Nimbin, we were told we would have an hour to look around and then an hour at the bowls club to eat a BBQ (well Sausage sandwiches). So we boarded the bus at 10pm, and would get back to Byron Bay at 5pm, but would only have 1 hour to look around the streets of Nimbin...hmmm, think someone needs to arrange the tour better. As it did turn out though, an hour was probably enough, as it was only one street full of hmm...strange folk.
It was a place that would rival Alice Springs in being a place that was hmm 'interesting'. I'm sure if you google it, you will realise why I say it is interesting (or if you just carry on reading). When we got off the bus (the one in the picture), we walked around the town and it was full of weird looking people asking us if we wanted weed, or some magic cookies. I just laughed and realised why I like going to these sort of places......because it enhances my motivation to do my best in life and never end up like them.
The Nimbin museum was funny as the content just consisted of what Nimbin seems to be famous for...drugs. Even the postcards in the tourist shop related to drugs, and Barrack Obama and other famous people. The tour guide asked us later on if we were hassled to buy drugs (hassled was a strong word, we were only asked), and people replied 'yes' and the tour guide laughed and said "hahaha that's just a normal day in Nimbin".
As we left, I looked out at all the weird people just standing in the street trying to sell stuff, and then a little kid walked past with his mum. Why would any parent want his kid want to live here? It's not a place I would visit again, but it was humorous, with people like an old 70 year woman continuously shouting "ganga ganga..who wants to buy ganga". It has definitely been added to the list of weird and wonderful places I have visited in Aus. Was well worth the small change I paid to visit this place. I didn't dare even get a cup of coffee in that place though, as I didn't know what they would put in it. High as a kite the lot of them.....
