The morning demonstrated Laura's inability to deal with the local spirits as she was evidently struggling. It had been a really good night, meeting some awesome people but the local brew will always come back and bite you in the arse.
As you can imagine, the morning was a non starter with us both drifting in and out of consciousness. I made the attempt to catch up with the blogs which were ever more falling behind us. The Vietnamese staff in this hotel seem to have one volume, bloody loud so that even when they are three feet apart they seem to feel the need to practically scream at each other, ever so slightly annoying. To compound the issue, after being in the bathroom I found out there was no running water, thank god we had baby wipes is all I will say!
After midday we eventually stirred to hunt for food. Our very brief walk led us into a restaurant close to our hotel. It was reasonable priced but the server (seemed to be owner) came over and had a quite 'not so friendly' demeanour. When enquiring about a side portion of steamed rice he replied he had none. The only way to have rice was to buy rice with an expensive main dish. Laura obviously challenged this and stubbornly replied 'how when you have no rice?!'... Think she's getting a little Asia'd out. Anyway what was he saying... No rice, in Vietnam, one of the worlds leading producers, what the hell are they talking about?! Basically we both knew it was a ploy to prevent us getting cheap stuff, they are just so sly like that it gets on your bloody nerves. Anyway, I ordered a noodle soup but Laura felt a bit queasy and decided to pass. We were soon joined by a couple who we had bumped into at least five I times during our stay here, stalking us much?!
Laura had headed back before me looking a bit green so I paid the bill and swung by the shop to by some crisps for her. On returning to the room, Laura was practically asleep again and I settled in next to her engrossed in my book. The afternoon soon passed us by as the light changed to crimson yellow then red in our small window. I decided to look for food nearby which lead me to a local place around the corner. I ordered from fried rice accompanied with sautéed spinach. It was tasty but the rice portion was small as seems to be the trend in Hoi An. I mean it is rice, it is in absolute abundance here, I mean firstly it is always overpriced for a start. Then you get insulted by the portions, like I have said before, rice comes out of people's ears here. It is just another case of getting people to spend more money as they never feel full. This is coming from me whose appetite has shrunk significantly since I've been travelling. Sorry, another rant over.
I stopped by and grabbed Laura some munchies as she only fancied dry food today. We relaxed the rest of the evening, teeth black from over indulging in Oreos as we will make the most of them being cheap, before Australia.
