I'd always heard that krabi wasn't that nice, and so it had never been high on my list of places to visit. So when the chance appeared of 7 nights in krabi I wasn't particularly excited. We were going to stay in Ao Nang, the beach side if krabi about 20 mins drive from the town. Ao nang main area is pretty small, there's a U shaped road of shops, restaurants and tour companies that cater mostly to the many tourists. The beach here isn't spectacular but it's easy to get boats to phi phi, Railey and other beaches in the vicinity. There's a few cheap rooms around, I saw double AC rooms for 250B a night and food can be bought for 50B as long as you stay away from the main tourist restaurants! 7 days would have maybe been too long but for the fact we were staying in a nice hotel with a pool and sept a few days there. There are lots of trips on offer so if you were to do a different one each day that would definitely fill your time. Krabi town walking street market is definitely worth a visit. Mini buses from Ao Nang charge 250pp for a round trip, the local bus can be taken for 50B each way. Or you can rent a moped for 150B per day. A full tank will cost you less than 200B and you won't need it all. We got lost and the journey there ended up taking an hour, the way back 30 mins and we only used half a tank! The night market is like most in Thailand, hundreds of stalls jostling for room with the smell and sound of frying and sizzling food and shouting hawkers. We also did a trip to Railey beach. Again a must see! The beaches are beautiful and the sea is bright blue/green. There's also a rock climbing centre for the adventurous. The food and drinks on the beach and near the resort are very overpriced but if you walk down along a concrete path next to the water (there's no beach here) you will find cheaper fare. Another trip that's recommended is the kayaking. But prepare for hard work! The half day is 2 hours of kayaking and the full day is even longer, your arms will ache! I probably would go back to krabi, but once you've done the tours there not much else to do. There's no nightlife and not much of a backpacker vibe.
