Mandalay airport was quite far out of the city - it took about an hour to get there by taxi, we arrived at the very sparse international airport - probably one of the most laid back airports we have been, we couldn't even find any check in desks when we arrived! We flew with air asia and as we took off we could see the long straight road that goes all the way back to Yangon - it went on as far as the eye could see and was just surrounded by these tall palm trees which also seemed to go on forever, 1 hour and 45 minutes later we were back in Bangkok which was such a contrast to Myanmar!
We decided to go back to the H-Residence hotel where we had stayed previously, so caught the shuttle bus from the airport to the skytrain and got off at Surasak. As we were checking in Kam turned slightly yellow in the face and said he felt really ill - we got in our room and he was immediately sick, he then spent the rest of the afternoon and evening chucking up! I got really worried about him and started thinking he had malaria - luckily he did eventually stop and slept for ages. We decided to just have a few rest days in Bangkok as Kam felt really washed out and wanted him to get his strength back.
So our next destination was Kachanaburi, where the bridge over the river Kwai is - we caught the skytrain to Victory Monument and then got a minibus there, the journey took a few hours and Bangkok is so big it took ages to get out. On the journey I started to feel quite unwell, I thought it was because we hadn't eaten anything so when we arrived we went straight to get some chicken and rice. Afterwards I felt even worse so we went back the hostel we had booked which was really nice and I had to go straight to bed - we only had a fan to cool us down and it was really hot so just had to lie there sweating! I slept all afternoon and night and in the morning I felt so much better!
We walked about 30 minutes up the road from our guesthouse to the bridge and got there just in time as the train came over - the river was very pretty and very touristy. We walked over the bridge and a guy was playing lady gaga on his violin singing like louie armstrong!! We then went to the museum about WW2 and how the bridge was constructed - it was very sad - we thought how hot we were just looking around and couldn't imagine all these POWs that were forced to work in horrible conditions where alot of them caught malaria and were literally starving - not nice.
