As it was our 10th wedding anniversary we decided to treat ourselves to a more expensive room for three nights and chose to go to Ko Lanta which is in the south of Thailand on the west coast. We caught a flight with Air Asia from Bangkok to Krabi - we got a very good price for the flights and only cost slightly more than the 12 hour bus journey would have.
We had one night in Krabi in a very cheap room that was like a sauna and smelt of bin. The following day we went to Ko Lanta via minibus / car ferry. The journey took about 2 hours in total. We arrived at the hotel we had booked - Maya Lanta. The room we checked into was very nice but as we were heading out we couldn't lock the door and none of the staff could either. They said we had to move rooms, there was only one other couple staying at the resort so there were plenty of rooms available. We told them it was our anniversary so they put us in a posher room instead! It was lovely - it had a bathtub, huge bathroom, massive bed, sofa, tv/dvd player, air con and a balcony. We were most impressed!
Now at the moment it is low season in Ko Lanta and it was dead! The sea was really, really rough and all the beachfront hotels and bars had storm defences up. We wanted to go and get something to eat but had difficulty finding anywhere open. We did find a place near the beach and it was windy and ghostly empty. Our hotel had a huge selection of DVDs available so we got a few and relaxed in the evening in our bathrobes - it was such a novelty sitting on a sofa watching TV!!!
On our actual anniversary we hired a moped and went searching for somewhere to have a nice dinner that was open. We drove into the Crowne Lanta resort and said we would like to look at their menus - we were taken off in a little golf buggy thing to the restuarant! As we were there we thought we would have a drink and had a very expensive mango smoothie each which cost nearly 10 pound! After that we treated ourselves to a massage - it was quite rough and I did feel like I was being beaten up! Our evening meal was lovely at Crowne Lanta - we were overlooking the rough sea and there were a few power cuts but it was nice. We were going to go for something expensive but we are so used to trying to save money that we couldn't bring ourselves to spend too much and went for a burger and chips!!! I think we consumed to much grease as the rest of the evening was spent doing shots of gaviscon and rolling around in food pain - romantic!
It was a really nice little anniversary break and I don't think we will ever get to spend another anniverary somewhere as exotic as Thailand - it was also nice to not slum it for a while, oh well back to cheapo rooms on the mainland!!
