Woke up this morning at 7am. Up and dressed and covered in sun cream and bug spay we went to breakfast. Just simple yoghurt and omlette yo start the day.
We were collected from reception at 8:45 and headed off in a nice cool air conditioned mini van to collect more people.
We eventually got to the diving centre where they kitted us out with diving masks, flippers and wetsuits. We were the only two from our bus ride that were scuba diving instead of just snorkling, so started getting a bit apprehensive as we had to sign several disclaimer forms that warned us of all the possible dangers of Scuba diving.
Once we had all our kit sorted we headed onto a bus with a lot of other people in a VERY hot non air conditioned bus to head to the boats.
Arriving at the bay we waited for about half an hour to get on the boat in the heat as other people turned up or the trip. As we got on the boat and started the journey I realised we were going to be on this boat all day. Me getting sea sick, this was not a pleasent thought but it was too late now!
Tried to fall asleep for a while but people kept waking me up. At one point we had to go downstairs inside the boat for a briefing on what we needed to do when diving. There was now a total of 7 of us diving.
Being inside on a bobbing boat didn't sit well with me and I ended up throwing up in a bin next to me...
After the briefing we still had a bit further to go before getting to the first stop with the first dive. This gave me enough time to throw up again before getting to our destination. How lovely :).
Jess and I were numbers 5 and 6 in the diving order as only one person was going in at a time. I was desperate to get off the boat so I went first. And standing in all the very heavy kit on the edge of the boat and having to put a mask over my eyes and nose was almost enough to make me throw up again, so I had to stop from jumping in and the guy very kindly threw sea water in my face to help refresh me, this was a shock! But did kind of work. So I braved the mask again and finally jumped in the water. We had been instructed to take calm, slow breaths, but this was very hard when the weight of the tank sends you under water before you float up again. So I admit my breathing wasn't all that calm during those first few seconds under water. However, the guy instructing us was so kind and patient and just waited on the surface untill my breathing was calm again, then just putting my head under at first, still holding tightly to the instructor, I soon found myself swimming downward to see all the pretty fish. And they were amazing. The variety of colours and shape seems hard to believe when you see them on TV. But they were all so different to any fish in england. I saw lots if small pink shiny ones. Rainbow ones that shone all different colours and others that were bright pink green and yellow. He also pointed out a tiny black and White sea snake to me. I was so excited to be seeing all the fabulous colourful fish I was so pleased I had done it and not gone with snorkling instead.
I had about 15 minutes underwater, and the ascent back up had to be slow not to hurt your ears. And for some reason it was the going back up that made me start feeling I'll so I wasn't liking how slow it had to be. Jess jumped in just as I was struggling to climb up the steps with flippers and a heavy tank. As soon as I was out of my kit I was straight back to the toilet to throw up again.
Once jess was out too we were both on the deck, and one of the kind crew men decided to throw us both in the water. However, not being able to drag both of us to the edge of the boat he just settled with me and I was thrown in! Jess joined me of her own accord though and we had a lovely swim in the crystal clear warm sea. We soon realised we didn't need to swim, as just laying on our backs we could float because the water was so salty.
Once back on the boat we moved to the second location, which of course involved me being ill some more.
Despite my goggles having water on the inside of the lense and so not being able to see amazingly clearly, the second dive was amazing. This was for two reasons. One, I felt like i had invaded nemo's world. I was in the big blue ocean looking at the coral reef all the fish lived in. It was just a giant wall of coral and and sea creatures. And number two, I saw the BIGGEST fish of my life. I found out afterwards it had been a scared puffer fish, but when the instructor first pointed it out to me it made my heart go, as I thought it was about to come and eat me! It looked very ominous as it was this massive shape hiding in a cave in the coral. As he took me closer to it I couldn't believe how lucky I was to see this magnificent fish up so close. I could almost have touched it. It had bright blue eyes each atleast the size of a golf ball. And it wasn't just long. It was fat (as it was puffed up), it was almost rectanglar with a proper round face with a mouth opening and closing at me. But as I got closer and closer it didn't try to back away or shoot out past us (which was just as well, or I may have cried from shock!), it just stayed there staring at us. I was also pointed to a zebra fish with lots of tail things which he informed me afterwards was poisenous to touch. As well as another rainbow coloured fish with a big mouth munching away on the coral. There were also a pair of fish that looked like clown fish with black bits on that came to greet us. The instructor was playing with them, trying to grab them as they darted to the side I had a go too. They just moved out the way of your hand, they didnt swim away in fear. They seemed quite inquisitive! As we were going back up a school of bright blue shiny fish swam right underneith us not taking any notice that we were there. It was such a magical experience.
Once back on the boat I once again needed to throw up! Then we were offered lunch which was really good food. However, I did struggle to eat my first plate and it did end up back in the toilet very quickly. But after eating more I decided to sleep inside where it was cooler. There was one more stop where people got out to swim, but I stayed inside sleeping for most of that. Didn't go back in the water. But soon we were back to shore and back on dry land which was a great relief to me!
Fortunatly we got an air conditioned bus back to the resort and so after spending all day on the boat, 2 dives seeing amazing things, and only throwing up 6 times! It was an amazing day and I can't wait to be able to get back into the sea!
