We're here in Te Anau, the most southerly point of our NZ trip and it is cooollllddd. Not as cold as England at the moment, I'll warrant, but it's still chilly. We drove here from Queenstown yesterday, through some more fantastic mountain scenery, by some lakes, stopping at Kingston for some photo opportunities and on to the plains before getting to Te Anau. We're spitting distance from Milford Sound here so it's all fjords and forested mountains. Rather spectacular.
Last night we got a boat over to the other side of the lake and went to the glowworm caves, which were very magical. We got taken through the caves, where there are waterfalls and whirlpools crashing against the rocks, and then got on a little boat in the pitch darkness, and floated through the glowworm caves. The glowworms were very bright, except for the masses of baby ones that were glowing very dimly because they're too little to glow brightly. By the time we got the boat across the lake it was 10.30pm, so we got to see a spectacular dusk and then snuggled down in the campervan.
We had pancakes with bacon and honey by the lake this morning (yum) and we're planning on tackling some of the Keppler Track today, so it's all go.
Next stop: Milford Sound.
