We surface late morning and were still home alone in the dorm. We jump on the metro (caoyang rd) which is a few minutes walk, and involves a game of chicken on the roads. Green pedestrian lights mean nothing, cars keep going until they HAVE to stop for you and bikes keep going regardless of hitting you or not. We witnesses one bike turning from our right and going straight down the left lane and Into incoming bikes. No one blinked an eyelid. Anyway we jump on line 11, (6rmb) and switch lines a few stops in tat jiaotong university (line 10) and get off at yuyan garden stop & head off to the yuyan gardens & bazaar. Chinese aren't big on breakfast and we struggle to find something to eat amongst all the trashy Jewellery shops... So.. Being the English slobs we are, we give in to a McDonald's.
We've got side tracked looking for food and spend about 30 mins looking for the gardens and going down some dodgy back alleys. After witnessing a small motorbike accident, (which is really not surprising) we arrive at the city god temple entrance (which is around the corner from the bloody McDonald's) and pay 50rmb to get in.
The gardens are enclosed in white walls which are lined with stone dragons. The city god temples not worth the entrance fee, but we've figured out where we are from it and head into the actual gardens. Shops and bazaars of, souvenirs, fast food, tea, jewellery etc are now the face of the old fashioned buildings. It's absolutely heaving but the gardens are beautiful so we spend a few hours looking around and getting stared at.
Prices are sky high for the crap in the shops so we don't get any tat and head off to 'the bund'
We don't bother with the metro and just follow the signs down which is a short walk.
The bund - on one side is a series of western grandiose buildings, and modern skyscrapers and on the other is the huangpu river overlooked on the opposite side by pudongs skyline which includes the shanghai tower.
We walk right along the river, take some pics, grab a drink and await the sunset. It's still really busy when the sunsets and everyone's waiting for the pudong skyline to come alight. Yasmin's been asked to have a photograph already - she says no at first and gets some filthy looks, she glows the colour of beetroot & agrees.
We notice a number of photographs being taken of us on the sly as we wait.
The buildings light up one by one, and at 7pm exactly the shanghai tower lights up - it doesn't disappoint. The river lights up in an array of colours and brightly lit boats sail down the river. it's all systems go with the pictures, we ask one guy to take a picture of us both, he refuses asking for a picture of me and him instead. I do wonder what happens to all these pictures that are taken of us. Anyway I don't agree and we find someone not so weird to take the picture.
The walk to the metro station is eventful - which involves watching a kid, drop his pants in full view, and have a poo directly onto a piece of newspaper on the pavement. Gobsmacked doesn't cover it. I don't shut up to poor Yasmin about it for the journey back, but we do agree, if we make the whole trip without getting spat or s*** on, it'll be a miracle.
Just before this unfortunate incident we grabbed some street food. I ask for a try of just a few dumplings and get about 30 cooked for 10rmb. Covered in spring onion and a chilli paste, we eat when we arrive back at the hostel. It's more than enough to share for 2, and they are amazing. We choke on the chilli and go to bed. We've got an Guy roommate who's Asian, he seems really disappointed when he sees us as reception apparently told him he was sharing with 2 guys. Oh well. He asks to turn the light off, grunts for about a hour in bed until he wakes at 7am the next morning and does the dreaded backpack and carrier bag rustle for at least an hour.
