So it's true, time really does fly when you're having fun!
After leaving Jo and Elliot in Brisbane I got a bus to Noosa, where I had an early night as I was up early to go to Australia zoo. This was Steve Irwin's zoo and is still run by his wife Terri and kids Bindi and Robert. After being in Australia for over a month I finally got to see kangaroos and koalas! There was also a show the Irwin's put on with crocodiles which was pretty awesome too. Was definitely worth a visit!
I had another day in Noosa but sadly the weather wasn't the greatest. I went for a long walk around the town having a bit of an explore and hung out with some people from the hostel. There was a free bbq for dinner and I ended up having a bit of a boozy night with an Irish group which was pretty fun although I was definitely feeling the next day! Noosa was a lovely little place, would definitely recommend.
Up early again I got back on a coach up to Rainbow beach and I met two really lovely guys Callum and Stuart who were heading up there as well. When we arrived we were staying in different hostels but our tours were at the same time so we knew our paths would cross again. Everyone had to attend a briefing and watch some painful videos from the 80's about dingo safety and how to drive a 4x4 in the sand. We also met what was to be our family for the next few days.
I had a few drinks in the bar with some of the girls I had met and who else was in there, Callum and Stu! We watched them carry out lots of party games and win copious amounts of alcohol before hitting the hay in preparation for a very early start the next morning.
7:45am and we were out and packing up the cars and having another briefing about dingos and driving, which wasn't helped by one of the cars not even being able to start… after some jump leads action we were on our way.
We got a small ferry over to Fraser Island and drove up to Lake Mackenzie. Unfortunately it had decided to rain, which was annoying as the lake is meant to be really clear and beautiful when the sun is on it. Some people braved a swim whilst the rest of us sat in our hoodies on the beach. When it started to rain we got back in the cars and drove to an area of civilisation where we stopped for some lunch.
After lunch we had a long drive to the aboriginal campsite that would be our home for the next few days. We were given another dingo lecture and weren't allowed to keep anything in our tents other than our sleeping bags. We cooked dinner in our families and got the campfire lit (yes Sam, we all know you lit the fire). The goon was cracked into and after a few campfire games we headed to Winkies, the 'nightclub' in the campsite which was named after a dingo who was shot for mauling a German boy who wondered to the beach when drunk carrying a bag of chips.
Somehow I ended up being the dj in Winkies whether I wanted to or not, maybe I've missed my calling in life! The night was definitely a fun goon filled affair and we got to bond with our group.
The next morning, pretty hungover and wearing a LA Lakers cap which I had no idea where it came, Erica my tent buddy and I got up for breakfast to find Sam and Lucy in the tent next to us had left cups of goon outside. It's a good thing dingos don't like goon really!! After an amazing scrambled eggs brekkie, we got in the cars and headed to the shipwreck that is on the island. This called for many a photo opportunity!
From here we went to Eli Creek, a natural creek that you can swim down that runs into the sea and the water is completely clear. The weather had perked up at this point so we got in for a bit of a swim. When we were leaving I was given the opportunity to drive one of the cars and it was so awesome although I got quite a hard leg as it was all on the really soft sand, you might as well be driving on an ice rink. It was also amusing as you couldn't adjust the seat so I was literally on tip toes trying to reach the pedals!!
After lunch the next destination was Indian Head, where we clambered up rocks to get an amazing view and even see a whale in the sea. Unfortunately the weather was turning again at this point, and when we got to champagne pools it was too cold to really go for a swim, as tempting as they looked. After the pools it was time to head back to camp for another family dinner and more campsite fun. We spent more time around the campsite this time, even borrowing an Israeli with a guitar to sing for us.
The next day we were up early again and I was the one taking the wheel it what could only be described as the party car, being one of only two sober people in there at 9am. Still it was definitely fun, apart from the fact I stalled twice in the sand, and even managed to follow the wrong group for about 20 mins. Whoops. Our leader Brett told me I was his favourite, but his least favourite driver. Oh well.. it was still fun, had lots of driving through water and over rocks etc. Never realised how much I missed driving but I really do!!
We stopped at lake Wabby, which required us to walk 2k in the sand and heat to get there which as you can imagine involved a lot of pissing a moaning, but it was definitely worth it when we got there as the lake was beautiful. I wasn't sure if I was going to go in for a swim or not until Callum appeared and threw me in, so that answered that one. It was really lovely and clear and definitely a highlight of Fraser Island. The 2k walk back to the car maybe less so…
After lunch it was time for us to bid adieu to Fraser and head back to Rainbow beach. For anyone over on the east coast I'd recommend Fraser as a must!
