We arrived in Saigon from Dalat after an eight hour bus ride, not as hectic as HaNoi but still mopeds rule the roads and as we searched for a hostel down the narrow alley ways we realised that in Saigon they also rule the back streets, pressed against walls letting them past whilst getting drenched wet through in the rain we finally made it to a hostel.
We went to the park as that seemed to be where all the locals were, there were celebrations going on so we decided to take a look around. Around the edge of the park there were a number of excercise machines, not electrical obviously like in a gym but they represented the same machines, a cross trainer (we didn't get a chance to go on that one), pull up bars, a waist twister and a leg press, the locals loved it and me and Kerrie had to have a go (where we could), Jh decided to avoid the humiliation as we got a few looks as we pressed our way to firmer thighs!
The locals were playing games and some stalls were making different characters out of plasticine such as dragons, power rangers, farm animals and also flowers, roses etc. They could make a dragon in less that two minutes, I know because I bought one :) lets see if it makes it home.
We visited the War Remnants Museum whilst in Saigon, a very difficult afternoon seeing the horror that was inflicted on the Vietnamese people, photographs showing the thousands of corpses many of them children, the tiger cages where suspect Vietcong were kept (we didn't go inside) and how the effects are still being felt today, unexploded mines and children being born with missing limbs (due the effects of napalm). Seeing the photographs of men, women and children effected by napalm are some of the most disturbing throughout the whole museum. Upstairs after learning about the war and the different weapons used there is more insight as to how Vietnam rebuilt itself and have tried to recover from the heavy bombardment during the war, still you can't quite forget what you have seen and still leave with emotions reeling.
Our time in Saigon was only short but we walked around the city for a number of days visiting sites and markets and overall enjoyed our wet, windy time here.
