Siem Reap, home to Angkot Wat, The Alley and Pub Street.
As usual we arrived in Siem Reap to a barage of Tuk-Tuk drivers wanting some business, pushing and shoving our way through we finally collected our bags and made our way to a Tuk-Tuk that wasn't pushing everyone and putting a sign in our face. We stayed at Garden Village Hostel which was basic (a bed, fan and cold shower but only $6 so you can't complain) and were reunited with Leeroy and Tooley after about two weeks apart.
We went to the local market in search of some bargains but we ended up in Swensens Ice Cream Parlour (I'm sure it must have been Tooleys idea, what with his mandatory 3 ice creams a day) with three big ice creams and a milk shake for me (delicious). With the weather being so unpredicable we spent the rest of the afternoon in the hostels rooftop bar playing cards.
We ventured down "The Alley" for food (Amok curry and fried frog for Leeroy) and then to pub street for the football. As we made our way to pub street (and when we walked back to the hostel) more and more children began following us, asking for food. It wasn't a nice experience being unable to help the children who obviously needed a lot of help. We all had an early night as we had to be up for Angkor Wat the next day.
4.45am and Tiger (our tuk-tuk driver) was ready and waiting to take us to Angkor Wat for sunrise.
We arrived at the entrance and all had our photo taken and ticket printed, Tiger then dropped us at the stone entrance to Angkor Wat and we walked to the lake side to see the sunrise. With it being cloudy sunrise wasn't as good as it could have been but the reds and pinks made their way through the clouds still making at a beautiful view. One disappointment with Angkor was that they were doing maintenance and there was scaffolding on some parts but as we entered the temple it was as exceptional as I remembered. The carvings and detail are just brilliant and each wall tells a story.
Once again my favourite of the day was Angkor Thom. As we drove down to the stone archway entrance we stopped to look at the statues on either side of the road and you could see the bullet holes made by the Khmer Rouge. We went into Angkor Thom and four faces of the Buddha were everywhere you turned, again it was like being in a fantasy land. So much so that we played Tomb Raider and the aim was not to be seen by anyone :) not very cultural but fun lol.
We visited many more temples throughout the morning all with different carving and all beautifully made but after lunch we headed back to the hostel to relax.
Leeroy and Tooley left the next day and we planned to leave the day after then I had a thought... We had arranged to meet my University friend Chris in Bangkok but he was going to Full Moon as were Leeroy and Tooley so.... WHY DON'T WE GO TO FULL MOON!!? And so the rush down to Southern Thialand began and we left Siem Reap the next day but not until I'd had one final Amok curry (love it!).
