We woke up at 7am. For breakfast Jay bought 8 dumplings for 8 CNY (80p) from a street seller.
After breakfast, we joined the queue to see Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall, which was free entry between 8am and 12pm. It was the longest queue we have ever seen. It was a procession, the queue took approximately 45 minutes. It was a bit weird seeing a preserved body in an open casket.
After this we went back to our accomodation, as we were hungry, we got some food, Jay had a Swiss Breakfast and Helen had chicken noodle soup.
After eating, we made our way to the Temple of Heaven, an Imperial Sacrificial Altar, the Emperors visited here for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. The entrance fee cost 35 CNY each (£3.55). It was a beautiful temple to see, it was big and the roof was painted blue.
After the seeing the Temple of Heaven, we made our way to the Lama Temple, one of the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world. On the way there, Helen stopped off to buy a stick of caramelised strawberries for 50p from a street seller, it was sweet and delicious. The entrance fee cost 25 CNY each (£2.55).
Inside the temple, there was a Buddha statue carved from a single piece of White Sandalwood of 25m tall, which is amazing! This was included in the Guiness Book of Records in 1993.
After seeing the Lama Temple, we went shopping at a Village Mall, Jay bought a Quicksilver hoodie top and a pair of Jordan trousers as he only had one pair of trousers for this trip. Helen bought a North Face rain jacket.
After some good shopping, we went back to our hostel to relax with a nice couple called, Holly and Mark. We had drinks with them.
For dinner we ate at our hostel, Jay had beef meatballs with rice and Helen had spaghetti bolognese. Jay's dinner was delicious. Helen's was ok for £2! Later in the evening we met another lovely couple called Rachael and Mark from Liverpool, they joined in with our drinking. They teach English in South Korea and enjoy it.
