Having been told that Hervey Bay is one of the best places to see humpback whales in the world we headed out to see them the next day. There were only about 8 people on the trip and because we were on a fast boat we saw our first pod of whales, a mother and calf, within the first 15 minutes. We moved on to see lots of mothers and calves, some with escorts. The role of the escort is to accompany the mother and calf to ensure they have safe passage as killer whales are very fond of humpback calves. During some sightings, the whales we very close to the boat so you could really make out all the features. We were yet to see a whale breach however as we headed back home the skipper spotted a splash so we sped over and were finally rewarded with a breach, amazing!!!
